As a retired captain - yes a vet, Woman, having a major in Sociology with a brief understanding on social/global stratification themed on various types of social mobility, derived from Weber's notion of Life Chances, I might be able to grasp why some Males are afraid of, (socio-econo-emotional v. rational), or dodge - the military role... (for better or worse??)

Mr. Dwan (whose letter was published on The Salt Lake Tribune, July 30, 2016. Surprising? From "Utah"!!), a retired 30-year Marine Corps reservist made 4 trips to Asia as a Marine but missed combat by 2 weeks. (Congratulations, came back with a whole piece - sorry to say this...)
He wants his Utah veterans to know that one of the commander-in-chief-wannabes, applied for and received 5 military draft deferments, thus avoiding any military service (sounds familiar to you? - quite similar to Rush Limbaugh and the like-minded social elites (an FB friend suggested to replace "elites" with the word "polyps"), or the socio- economically privileged who "patriotically" SUPPORT the troop as long as not enlisting themselves or dodging with the best, the effective way they can while "strategically" shortchanging veteran budget and benefits. Why...?), which, in fact (from my humble opinion), might have caused him to give up an "extremely LUCRATIVE risk and heavy INVESTMENT" (an Opportunity Cost - a hindsight?) to add up very precious glories to his presidential resume :) ; or in a lucky scenario, been able to be back with a whole-piece, and avoided to contract PTSD, lost limbs, as well as the rest of "sacrifices"?
Note, in a next day TV interview, this commander-in-chief-wannabe defended himself that he also made lots of sacrifices by creating jobs.... (erhhh, via generational pass-on/inheritence and playing with several famous Bankrupcy games via law loopholes...???)

Xena Sun-Lasting The multi-faceted military functions are beyond words - for what sorts of better and what kinds of worse? Many old and new research/analyses and critiques from different perspectives of function/latent function/dysfunction vs. social/global conflict have revealed more apocalyptic scenarios than any dire conditions possible to happen. Are they a "pre-supposed" last resort to the world catastrophe, or the dystopian peace?
But, then, when all "MEN" are created equal - either in reality, ideally, or mythologically, while some "MALES" are more equal than the rest - reminding you of the interesting old jargon of Social Darwinism? (e.g., other males, women: the largest minority group in the world, the diverse minorities, the marginalized people, the disadvantaged, the less/unfortunate ones, the deprived, the oppressed, and the powerless, helpless non-human-form sentient beings) - could that be one of the reasons why the gold-star fallen solider Kuhn's father wanted to lend out the US Constitution- if written in, English....?

Indeed, how to make life enjoyable and how to spend the "hard-earned" money, is none of anyone's business.
But just being curios about how much fun can be made by checking online for the rest of the recreational excitements in "easy-hunt-easy-killing" for pleasure of one of the commander-in-chief-wannabes' family member- so some people who can afford, might have something to look up to, or emulate...
