May 19 (Sa) 2018 For what and to whom to Stand By?

Have a nice weekend!
Believe it or not - I have never watched this type of wedding joy.
This morning, the first time - not because I wanted to,
but "had to" to observe this unique event.
I quite enjoyed the bride's big smiles that helped write the following snippet.

May 17 (Th), 2018 The faces of the Owl

The beauty of maintaining the posture of the left hand side of owl to the end of the semesters!!

Woooow! The recurrent story! Just done - the last classroom activities of spring semester, 2018 ( of my 7 classes of Art Appreciation, Diversity Studies, and Sociology). Show Time: competency/problem-based evidential learning. See below- randomly selected 4 projects. Will post more later.

At the beginning of each semester, doubt, curiosity, or any other type of emotions may exist (to "indulge" in a non-native English speaking instructor in the Mid-West setting without extra charge of tuition for such a value-added trait embedded in her "Internationalizing" pedagogy ! ). At the end, everybody learned without being aware of challenging their well-occupied "Comfort Zone".

Most of students are truly toughhhhhh and persiiiiiiiiiistent to get job done!
I enjoyed this semester a lot - so far, maintaining the left side of Owl image!

Now, get back to the real tasks - grading, feedback...etc, which may lead me to the appearance of the right hand side of the Owl - soon !

Marcie Bakker Congratulations. Your students are so lucky.
Sun Lasting  Marcie, thanks.  I can be much luckier than students when having several D2L type of students in your classroom..

Elizabeth Witt It must feel so good to look at these works and realize what a positive impact you are having on people's lives!

Sun Lasting Dear Witt, ideally, as you said. But every semester, a small group of students reject/resist the contents and activities based on their upbringing, in particular, related to religion and social class. From left to right, all are welcome to my classroom.

Elizabeth Witt But the student you reached who talked about the small, predominantly white Christian town she grew up in - you have to feel pretty good about that. I feel pretty humbled by what you do. You change people's lives. There is absolutely nothing I do in the course of a day that even remotely competes with that.

Sun Lasting Elizabeth Witt , wow, you read into the details of Heather's project! I still have more than a hundred projects waiting for grading.

Elizabeth Witt Sun Lasting I read all of them as much as I could see on my tiny machine!

Sun Lasting Elizabeth Witt You are a voracious reader!

Elizabeth Witt I try. LOL I appreciate that they let you share and that you shared with us. That is a privilege that deserves respect and attention.

Facilitating/teaching Diversity Studies can be a risky business - under such a climate as a "colored - not colorful, person beyond black-n-white"... One might need to walk on eggshell without breaking it or trudge through landmines without being shredded into pieces - in some rugged terrains ! It can be symbiotically exciting and stressful. There are different types of capitals benefiting people's life: political capitals, social capitals, emotional capitals, cultural capitals...etc.
I perceive the significance of "Educational Capitals" - hopefully existing somewhere...?

May 11 (F), 2018 Define a ""fatherhood mandate"

Happy Mothers' Day to all types of human moms and non-human moms !

On this Mothers' Day, thinking of my mother tongue - Taiwanese.
My 2nd language is Mandarin.

On these Mothers' Days, I am thinking of my mother tongue - Taiwanese, then reminiscing the struggle between Taiwanese and Mandarin. The latter, is my second language, (a mandate, suppressing the popular Taiwanese and Japanese during and after WWII). From the elementary school on, Mandarin was taught by some China-mainlanders who followed Chiang Kai-Shek's regime to Taiwan after their Civil War. In Junior high, I started my A, B, C, spelling, and grammars from my Taiwanese teachers, due to some edu-policy, for better or worse, who knows?

Language is the most important component of the whole cultural package., shaping every bit of your identities and the outlook of the world.

Unfortunately, her best functionalities became (is still being) her Achilles' heel.

So, what are/were the most destructive (and invisible as well) wars on this planet?

Ya, the thousands of language holocausts....

Sun Lasting How to define a "fatherhood-mandate" ? Bless to those (human and non-human sentient beings) who are lucky/unlucky to have father(s); including he-dad and she-dad, hanging around with their mother(s), ya, he-mom and she-mom :)! - The unlucky one, might make you stronger?Sun Lasting Great moms (some of them are lucky/unlucky to have a 'husband" hanging around! Sun Lasting If you believe in Erich Fromm's observations...in the art of loving, the major difference between animal motherhood vs. human beings' is that animal mothers render mother-child separation "very Naturally" when time comes, while human mothers, depending on her upbringing/maturity and knowledge, might leave various "bio-psychological legacies or aftermaths" on her children due to the Symbiotic Love dominating most of this type of bond.

May 5 (Sa) 2018 The Tech College vs. The Traditional 4-year College

A couple of school activities:
Scholarship Reception
5/2 (W) 4:30 - 6:00 pm. At the Student Commons; a highlight of one of very interesting student project presentations.

Congratulations to Rachel.
This endowment was set up in 2006 in memory of my parents who gave me precious life to live, learn, and love.

Congratulations to Even.
The endowment was set up in 2016 in memory of my dear sister (the youngest one of my family). She is courageous and generous. She overcomes many life obstacles and stays strong and is caring for many people. animals, and the environment. She makes me rethink the meaning of life and the definition of being brave...

Elizabeth Witt Congratulations to your students! I wish them continued success.

Sun Lasting Elizabeth, thanks. I think - they will, even though they are not from my own classes.
Every semester, the most exciting thing of being part of the Tech College is to have chance to meet outstanding students who overcome life obstacles and are determined to succeed! Many students face lots of challenges in life: family/class background, jobs/careers, personal events and rest of issues that most 4-year college students might not encounter. !

This is the main reason to keep me doing things that I like to do and delaying my plan to go back to my native country.
