They cut off the fin of each caught shark, then toss them (the finless sharks) back to the ocean (decrease the burden of the boats)... to die with a slow death...
What kind of delicacy for a Damn Soup !!!!!
Ban such demonic brutality! ( About 20 years ago, some marine wildlife protection watchers/groups initiated the BAN alert!)
In 2000, the US. Congress passed the Shark Finning Prohibition Act, which made it unlawful to possess a shark fin "in US waters" without a corresponding carcass. 12 states observe this Act. Now, the shark-fin-soup is still on the high-end restaurant menu.

The fin-cut-off sharks were tossed into the sea - a slow death...

260 boats are hunting down the protected species of sharks for their fins, along Galapagos. This species is protected by Ecuador.

Unless too brutal, I reserve my reports, not to reinforce a negative image of a specific people or country.
I try to encourage THIS country to do good things.

Yes, supply and demand issues:
Who are those that CANNOT eat without the bloody shark-fin-soup? The poor fishermen cannot afford such a "delilcacy"!

I sympathize with this overpopulated country (the working-ant-n-bee-Chinese people, not my pity for the CCP) to find food for sale, but not this way!! This is an organized crime against the non-human sentient beings!!

I posted the following info a few months ago regarding paddlefish who survived on this planet for millions of years, declared extinct on Jan 8, 2020, due to the dam-building, overfishing, busy water traffic, and pollution in CCP-China: https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3044520/chinese-paddlefish-native-yangtze-river-declared-extinct

The Faroe Islands Whale Hunt as a tradition: Each year in the summer months the so-called Grindadráp is taking place in the Faroes Islands. Around 800 long-finned Pilot whales and many Atlantic white-sided dolphins are killed in this non-commercial and organized slaughter which has existed as a tradition for centuries.

This is a classic video (can be controversial to those who believe in "the Logic of Growth" approach, instead of the limits-to- growth theory) for my last unit of Macro Sociology teaching-n-learning: Population, Urbanization, and Environment https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfGMYdalClU

Though I left my 25 years of teaching in May 2020, sometimes, on my social media, I forget that.
The above unit content/lecture notes - Population, Urbanization, and the Environment on my PowerPoint was converted into a video a couple minutes ago.

As of September 6 (Sn), 2020 - The US. and World Population:

This is the US. and World Population Clock - running per second: https://www.census.gov/popclock/

Based on several mathematical models, the sustainable population of the Earth is 7 billion which was reached on October 31, 2011. Now, 7.6 billion.

The bottom line: the root of all issues (resources, chances, opportunities) is: " the quantity and quality of Population," speaking sociologically.
