A more civil vs. a less civil, makes things different, so most poeple "are well-trained" to respond to this pattern - treating the less civil one leniently, and imposing severe criticism on the more civil one...

Recalling when Mr. John Kerry ran for president, how many people picked on his wife - a doctor and entrepreneur, speaking with an "accent," which was very "Un-American" - deemed by those less civil ones.

President Ford pardoned Mr. Nixson in 1974, and President Carter pardoned 200,000 vietnam draft evasions (which should have included the current president-elect.)
