The following snippet was part of Meet and Greet activity in the online class.

Week 3-4 Notes and online communications

Ladies and gentlemen,

Exam I was done. Here is the score distribution of this class:

2 questions are more challenging than others. So here are the adjusted scores (total is 64): 64, 62, 62, 62, 62, 58, 58, 56, 54, 52, 52, 52, 50, 50, 48, 46, 44, 42 and 28.

Original test had 35 questions (70 points) The textbook comes with these 2 authors' standardized questions in the test-bank. I eliminated 3 complex questions to 32, and modified some to make it less ambiguous, but still challenging.

As Framework Essay I is the longest and the challenging one. You will do better in the next exams. Mainly when you work on the coming up Frame Work Essay hands-on projects, you will pay more attention to  details to prepare for the exams.

The test scores mainly, for me as reference. I less focus on exams but more on your writing, thinking and interaction which you earn extra points to make up the lost points in exams.

I will evaluate the level of difficulty to the learning condition and make some adjustments. At the end of the semester, I will do individual learning assessment and sometimes eliminate one or two undesirable scores.

So, don't worry, just keep on doing good work (worksheets, discussion and peer interactions…etc).

Do well on the coming Unit 2 learning activities. Email me if you have questions. Lhuang@cvtc.edu

Week 1- 2  Notes and Online Communications
1. Week 1 Meet and greet -Due on June/4 (W) before 10 pm.
We all need patience to get through the very challenging first week via this new E360 system!!!

Ladies and gentlemen,

Welcome to our DIV online world ! Cannot wait to see you online !

Let me introduce myself to you! My name is Li-chin (Crystal) Huang, your online learning facilitator. You can call me Li-chin, or Crystal.

I worked 12 years as a social worker, language teacher (English and Japanese), military instructor (now a retired captain), news reporter, Congressional staff, and Government official in the social policy research. This semester is my 11th year teaching at CVTC. Before that I worked one year at the Dunn County News, taught 4 years at UW-Stout as well as 1 year's teaching Arts at the Wayne State College.

Don't tease me as a bookworm. Be honest- I am far from it. Nowadays, many people have multiple majors and minors due to the fast changing society. Being a lifelong learner becomes an important part of life. So, I have 5 majors (Sociology, Social Psychology, Socio-political Science, Studio Art /Art Education, and Learning Technologies) and 4 minors (Military Education, Women's Studies, Journalism, and Computer Science) in my academic pursuits due to personal and situational reasons.

I am a good consumer and producer in the educational enterprise. I end up earning money from my teaching and spending (or investing?) on my education. Details about me can be found in

http://ci8395.blogspot.com or http://plus.google.com/+XenaCrystalLCHuang Also click the Staff Information Button in the navigation bar to access the above link and my email address, office, and office hours and so on.

One of my constant adventures is trying to herd the cats (5 of them are ours and fostering 4, as well as taking care 2 alley cats showing up in our backyard very often) - very exciting, but not easy!

My favorite quote is "Life without music and cats (dogs and any other 2 to 10 legs...) is a mistake."

The other one is: "Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are"-B. Franklin.Welcome again, and wish you enjoy this very interesting and rewarding class!

Now it is your turn. In short, in this discussion you will complete the following steps to interact with peers and me:

Read the Requirements Carefully to earn full points (Extra efforts may earn extra points!!)

Competencies: The goal in this activity is to engage in a conversation that establishes a trustworthy learning community. You will be evaluated upon the quality and frequency/online attendance to the discussion boards.

Ladies and gentlemen,

I have read your Scavenger Hunt worksheet.Only one peer did not submit this assignment. Many of you did very well. Glad to know you are goal oriented, self-disciplined, and self-motivated online learners! Some of you genuinely and honestly mentioned the issues of procrastination which was a common phenomenon of many people. It is the biggest enemy of online learning, indeed. My suggestion- working ahead of our schedule is one of the safest approaches. Many of my previous online students who were smart, and some could be over-confident, and then ended up not being able to earn an desirable grade!

SO the coming up BIG assignment takes time to read, think, digest, and reflect. I cut off another assignment for this Unit, so you can have extra time to do well on this assignment which you will use it for the coming up Exam 1.

Don't forget to post your last item on Discussion to engage with online classmates.

So far 7 Early Bird peers have completed Framework Essay I assignment. I am reading now. Submit your work as soon as possible. Email me if you have questions lhuang@cvtc.edu Crystal

Date: 06/04/14

Ladies and gentlemen,

Nice to meet most of our onlinemates. Glad to know you a little bit. I have posted your score on your gradebook with my private feedback.

A couple of peers did not interact with at least 3 peers. If you have done so, please email me to read and put 3 points back to your gradecell.

The coming short worksheet is our course work orientation - scavenger hunt. You need the textbook to complete this assignment to avoid the NO SHOW report. I also want to inform you that the first hands-on project (Framework Essay I pp.1-40) will not be a PowerPoint presentation but on a Microsoft Word format. So you won't be shocked if you are not familiar with PowerPoint 2013 (but older version shall be fine). For Framework Essay II, III, and IV, you will use PowerPoint to share your products on Discussion - Just let you know beforehand.

Save time for the coming up BIG assignment of Framework Essay I (you will have enough time to complete it, but still START EARLY). Email me if you have questions lhuang@cvtc.edu Crystal/Li-chin

Introduction to Sociology  (Hybrid Compressed)

Week 1- 2

Date: 06/10/14

 Soc hybrid compressed class

Ladies and gentlemen,

Tonight thanks for the right hand side peers’ goodie bags. Keep the humor and wisdom in the bag for you need them to do the final collage/scratch book project (will give you more details and grading rubrics later).

Also thanks to Eric, Thad, Dabie, Dee, Sams sharing the individual vs. society activities, and Jake’s sonorous voice for the quiz. (If I missed your name, email me).
The mini-presenters for sociological mind-eyes’ analysis are: Eric+Amy, Jessie Ru+Sophie, and Marie+Toua.

Again, the hybrid compressed class is quite stressful. So little time and so much to cover…
Hopefully, you have adjusted the fast pace and my quite redneck yelling voice/accent :) !

I collected your quiz 1 score and the in-class activity (the mutual influence between individual vs. society).

Reminder:

1. Review chap 2 and Complete quiz (in E360->;Lessons)
2. Preview chaps 3+4 and come up with 10 (5 questions for each chapter).
Type up and print off a copy to bring to class.

3. The left side peers prepare 26 goodie bags based on chaps 3 and 4.
Pick up 2 terms from the chapters (one from each) to do the goodie bags
i. one humor
ii. one wisdom
iii. Gift(s) you want to generously share with peers.
(Seemingly, some peers prefer less sugar, butter, carbohydrate things)
Tiny gifts would be fine to replace the sweeties.)

iv. With you name in the goodie bags (so we know who gives what).
4. Everyone browses chap 7 Deviance
Email me if you have questions lhuang@cvtc.edu

6/3 class notes and reminder

Date: 06/03/14

Ladies and gentlemen,

Nice to meet you tonight. Social interaction is the basic and the most important dynamics in building human relations (structures and functions !) So, hope you feel more comfortable and know our class a little bit better. I briefly introduced the big picture of Sociology and went through 3 sociological paradigms (perspectives or analytic mind-eye tools). Then we ran out of time. I collected your drawing and 5 questions.

Since we are short of 24 hours for this compressed hybrid class, you need to spend time (at least 3 to 4 hours outside class to make up what we will lose each week) to read and complete assigned tasks.

Reminder:
1. Review chap 1 and download quiz in e360=>Lessons. Complete, print off a copy, bring in next class for onsite correction.

2. Everyone previews chap 2. Select 2 terms, ideas, or theories, then go on line to look for relevant photos, cartoons…etc. visual enhancer for the goodie bags (peers sat at the right hand side):

Prepare 25 copies of following items.
i. one humorous info
ii. one serious info
iii. Gift(s) you want to generously share. (10 points)

Bring to class on coming Tuesday.

3. Look for 2 video links about cultures that interest you and post on E360 Discussion. You can post one long video (around 20- 30 minutes and one short of 5-10 minutes).

c. Critique on at least 2 video links of peers' with at least 50+ words for each. In your critiques, you need to use 2 terms from chap 2 relating to the videos. Highlight/bold the terms (10 points)

4. Please browse our syllabus, if you have questions, bring to next class as well.

Email me if you have any questions.
