July 17 (W), 2013. The Red Envelops!!!
Crystal Huang changed her cover photo.
RED ENVELOPS!!! (A friend asked "what's that" after I uploaded the above red and pink picture to my fb cover?) So, here is a brief explanation : )! -
My dearest sister Akiko's 70th birthday is coming.
Typically, us siblings don't celebrate our birthday which is Mother's suffering day. But this one is different. As the old saying goes- "The eldest sister is a mini-mother, deployed by the Almighty Power to assist Mother" !
Somewhat I got a lucky birth order, not like my eldest sister and brother who needed to assume the family responsibility (and quit school) to help parents financially and took care of the younger siblings.
Thanks, Li-ling (our baby sister, typed these nice words on the envelops for me), helped me get ready several Red Envelops to Akiko and the younger kids (Wish I were in Taipei now...).
Akiko worked since she was 8 or 10 years old until married at 26. She earned the familiar - pennies/cents per hour wages. Most of her jobs had been in the fabrics/textile factories. Inevitably, her lungs were seriously affected when OSHA type of agency was much a foreign notion several decades ago!
To alleviate the pain in my sister's lungs, my mother used to cook a home remedy - something like pig's gore/blood with Taiwanese pickles in soup (鹹菜豬血湯)....erhhh, sounds primitive ;P!!??
(A reminiscence): Several textile/garment factory fires happening during last two years killed more than 1,500 poor workers in different countries. My goosebumps tell me - thanks to the Almighty Power, my dear sister completed her tasks without being visited by those catastrophes!
Taiwan, now enjoys a great economic success. Children are kings and queens nowadays. Meanwhile, those hardships continue transferring to other countries. The sad stories - have been repeated under the glory of globalization...
As a long term full-time child-laborer during Taiwan's economic taking-off era, Akiko, indeed a pure "MIT baby", contributed her strength for the MIT (Made In Taiwan) kingdom many years ago...

Crystal Huang My eldest sisters (Teroko, Akiko) and brother (Takeo) were born during the last stage of Japan's occupation in Taiwan (near the end of World War II), thus they were carved with the scar of the Imperial-Colonialism - with Japanese type of names.

July 16 (T), 2013 What can you do during the precious summertime in A Northern State?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvUQcnfwUUM
The original poem is from 春日偶成 of 程颢.
程颢 Cheng Hao (1032–1085 A.D. Song Dynasty), styled Bochun (伯淳), from Luoyang. In his youth, he and his younger brother Cheng Yi were students of Zhou Dunyi, one of the architects of Neo-Confucian cosmology.
Here is my simple translation of his poem:
雲淡風輕近午天,
Carefree clouds floating with the soothing breeze in the afternoon,
傍花隨柳過前川。
leaning flowers and following the willows, I was strolling toward the lagoon.
時人不識余心樂,
The passengers had no clue of my inner joy,
將為偷閒學少年。
confused by my monkey-child behavior that went rambunctious.

July 15 (M), 2013. Reflecting on Waiting for Yesterday: Pages from A Street Kid's Life

Crystal Huang is taking a break to write a reflection on the book just read - Waiting for Yesterday: Pages from a Street Kid's Life:
The author vividly depicts the pattern of immigrants’ silent tears, resilience, constraints, and liberation across three generations through his extended Italian-American families' life embedded in the keen, emphatically observed birth place- the East Harlem. From the reminiscence of the international renowned scholar, social critic, political analyst, and author, Dr. Parenti - again wields the mighty pen via his genuine and piercing vigor wading through the sociopolitical troubled-waters, touched with his signature of humor and humanitarianism.
