Found some previous students (of a Tech College) who enjoyed Democratic Party's fighting for their educational benefits, but loved (or voted for) rep./maga's great rhetoric.

Krystal Huang
Having taught social sciences and art at a tech college for 17 years, except a few students of the liberal art transferring track, I found many students who were benefited from the Democratic Party's educational policies, enjoyed the rep./maga's BIG talk (or biting the hand that helps them...)
You could imagine how challenging it is to be an educator in such an environment...

Krystal Huang
I remember during that time there were conservative social elites in the community urging governments to stop/reduce such aids to those underprivileged students.

Krystal Huang
Having said so, I admitted there were not without some controversies. For example, from students' writing assignments, I found some of them using their own experiences against student aid or social programs. Here is one: this female student complained that she worked 2 part time jobs, took care of her young kids, and attended school without student aid, but her sister, an unwed mom with babies, got all sorts of welfare things and subsidies. It was unfair to her...

What should I respond to her statements? Hard, right?
Well, I just said, "You are very strong. Most of us experience hard time once in a while. I think your sister needs urgent help, otherwise, your baby nice/nephew may face lots of life threats. Your sister, will be as strong as you after this difficult time..."

Krystal Huang
One male student provided his story to echo what I expressed. His sister also had a similar situation. She did receive the basic help, and then stood on her own feet. She later opened a small business to support her family.

Krystal Huang
So, the issue is how to make a social program thoughtful and effective, and through proper education to reduce the above cases' recurrence.

Found a relevant old post of Nov. 20, 2022.

Also found this old class lecture note. It is a general concept, and may not explain well on some peculiar phenomena happening now.

June 30 (T), 2020 Random thoughts amid the peak of the pandemic

Krystal Xena LC Huang

June 28 at 6:49 AM ·

Facebook friends asked a little bit about my background and life experiences. So I listed some info on the left-hand side of this page (on facebook). Some schoolings (ya, to meet with Credentialism... my mother who could not read nor write, used to say "一枝草,一點露. 天無絕人之路", which is similar to "上天有好生之德: "Nature nurtures everything silently without inviting credits", or " Every dark cloud has a silver lining; there is a will, there is a way") chewed up my hard-earned savings/debts from teaching to keep on surviving. This is a fun-life journey. I am luckily endowed with enough interesting-twists-n-turns, so far. (Friends asked how I got money to study in the US. Aren't you rich and privileged? I think I was just lucky to win a big scholarship that pushed me here to study and ended up teaching.)

Ya, call them "innocent people" - uninformed, misinformed, and the less informed (worse than the uninformed, oftentimes, not by choice, but designed by the system). The US. is the top spender on education but falls behind in many aspects of learning outcomes...

The US spends more on education than other countries. Why is it falling behind?

Marcie Bakker

Thanks. Interesting! I remember in EC, educators would say the lower scores in national tests at EC North High School were due to the “immigrant “ population. Canada’s migrant citizens aren’t behind!

Krystal Xena LC Huang

My response disappeared?

Krystal Xena LC Huang

I retyped it. Just some observations (nothing to do with serious academic research at this juncture).

The elitist/private education in the US is spectacular.

Here are some other well-known facts:
The super-capitalist economy makes the lower social classes' employees chasing paycheck by paycheck, deprived quality time, and extra resources to invest in their offspring. Not to mention, some of the newer immigrants come from less fortunate countries suffering from instability and poverty; learning English can be a huge hurdle, just to name a few.

Then, the techie digi-taining and super-commercialism in promoting overconsumption distract learning.

This one is well known: Parents engaging in children’s education along with schools can be found in most of the Far-eastern countries (can be my bias.)

Now touching on the Tsunami trend in online learning: An elephant in the room question:

Why do many edu-institutions push harder and harder in online learning (I mean, the pre-covid19 epoch), because of the one-way ticket, being thoughtful to the busy people who deadly need the online education, or providing high quality, authenticity, promoting deep learning? The following phenomenon is less likely to happen in the 4-year colleges and can be anecdotal: why some administrators/supervisors use online courses to reward those favorite/obedient instructors and punish the "special" or "recalcitrant " teachers (during Walker-era. Before that, senior faculty swept through all the online classes with 14 students per class, and after Walker, 27 students per online)?

This is my personal story: every semester, why do faculty, students fight for online teaching and learning opportunities/seats (based on my teaching experience in the US.) It happened one semester when I was on sabbatical leave, one of my officemates who, in fact, one of my best friends. We, 8 faculty, shared one tiny cozy office) requested the new ONLINE course - Social Problems which I developed after a couple of years’ f2f teaching, as her extra earning loads. I let her copy all the curricular contents, syllabus, learning activities, worksheets, videos, and the rest of the teaching resources that I created and collected (I thought only a semester when I was on leave). When I came back, she insisted that she owned it because of the seniority rule ( ya, the pecking order during the pre-Walker era) for she did not need to be in the classroom to teach this very tough course (and she did not major in sociology).

In fact, I was intrigued why I got great online teaching evaluation every semester, much better than that of my f2f, hybrid/blended, and teleconferencing classes, while I spent much less time which I constantly felt guilty with, compared to the f2f teaching which I always double-triple down my teaching efforts because of my love in f2f teaching while recognizing the convenience and benefits of online facilitation. Indeed, time spending on each student and course might not have a high correlation with the learning outcome. Still look into more academic studies focusing on this topic.

Sidebar info: I have an ambivalent feeling in teaching online: joy and guilt. But I also found several instructors turned into administrators/supervisors who were marvelously completed Ph.D. within a couple of years through online degree programs. Indeed, sone online advanced degrees are not only nice-to-have, but have-to-have, and enriched many people.

The popular learning management system/LMS software CANVAS has a better tracking on the online time spending and interaction feature of both students and instructors in various utilities (hopefully, also "administrators" who supervise), but not without controversies.

And don’t get me wrong that I am an online Luddite; ya, nothing to be bragged about this f2f program (driving a trip of 3 hours to Twin Cities to take one or two classes per semester during nights or weekends, which took me 10 years attached with a $60,000 learning debt to complete while teaching 18 to 21 credits Per Semester. This program is called "Learning Technologies, previously, Instructional system and technologies)." I added a minor in computer science as a learning enhancer with my dissertation titled" Preferences, Pedagogical Strategies, and Challenges of Instructors Teaching in Multiple Delivery Formats within A 2-Year College Context".

Krystal Xena LC Huang

I think Online teaching and learning is a superconscious and CONSCIENTIOUS or heavily ethics-loaded job to all stakeholders. Oftentimes, it is more an economic-political issue than the pedagogical ones.

Krystal Xena LC Huang

Regarding different types of immigrants to the US., some well-to-do immigrants pursue even better life chances for their offspring. They tend to be privileged groups in their respective country to venture into the Land of Free and Home of the Brave in bringing in super BIG money. "Welcome- to USA.!"

Those from less fortunate countries fighting for basic needs won't be treated the same as immigrants from the monetary countries. Do the reading, writing, and arithmetics testing scores reflect their immigrants' socio-economic status as well?

William Buell

cant make a silk purse out of a sow's ear

Krystal Xena LC Huang

I am horribly opinionated at this point: It takes at least 3 Ph.D. degrees' time, money, energy, and other resources to raise a child, heavier than a whole village's because some villages can be poor, lacking resources to nurture a child, Children can be born rich/resourceful or trapped in poverty. Anyway, no more elaboration on this topic, I am never qualified to raise one.

Human babies are precious and shall not to be ruined by rough hands and dire conditions.
No child should be brought to this world to suffer from man-made poverty, violence, injustice, and in particular, irresponsibility.
Ha, serving feline majesties doesn't need 3 Ph. Ds', because growing up to be a tax-payer is not their life purpose ! Hope my majesties don't get mad at this anger-provoking statement.

Krystal Xena LC Huang

By the way, congratulate Anderson Cooper who spent tons of money on hiring a surrogate woman for his child. Then another, perhaps million dollars to raise and invest in this rich kid to be a "silk purse"? Can this be an outlier-case?

Aug. 18 (Sn), 2019 Few educators dare !!

I admire professor Rybak's courage in his book "UW Struggle - when a state attacks its university" published in 2017.  It traced back to a time when education and educators were so downtrodden by power fetishists in an unprecedented way to a used-to-be great state :
the creator of The Wisconsin Idea...).

Few educators dare !!

I was fascinated by the Wisconsin Idea which lured me with a choice to stay here as an international student, social science educator, artist, and sojourner...

Dr. Rybak's bravery is admirable (He chooses to be a firm edu-defender, a great warrior, while I excused myself for not having enough "Edu-Cultural Capital" to become one). Prof. Rybak focuses on 4-year colleges, but the 2-year may be even more fascinating... Though I see the budgetary constraints and tenureship issues in a different light, he spoke out several ideas that I agreed to.

Like most of the non-human animals, people are embedded with an instinctual and powerful AMYGDALA! Is this why we admire the brave, the courageous?

It is "safe" to be a coward, for courage is intrepid, so rare, too precious... They don't have to be martyred/enshrined to be admired and respected.

Though I don't teach history which is one of my most favorite fields and strengths, I am now facilitating sociology, diversity studies, and the coming up introduction to visual arts heavily depending on the basic understanding of American History/World History.

I innocently talked to other judges about my dream ( in particular, the high-school-teacher-to be) regarding how to ground up - the younger the better - facilitating the young to love and enjoy reading, talking and thinking about history (the authentic type - people's history), philosophy, art, music, and literature...( I honestly love STEMSS more than STEM, even though, Technology is part of my majors).

A friend just teased, "Yes, but, these subjects 'make no money, in particular, for those youngsters from the disadvantaged families'! - you are daydreaming."

" Well, what else can you say? Instead of glorying the super-capitalism, why not just let's vote for Trump to be our Messiah smile emoticon!"

Stereotypically speaking, even in the 21st Cent, some people still deem disciplines like art, music, literature, "luxurious" sports, philosophy, history, sociology, political science/law...etc. being mostly affordable to the middle and upper class, or the affluent societies - yes, for the Leisure Class to "kill-mental-time" !

Coincidentally, not precisely, from my glancing over this Big event, all the young scientists, almost all are Caucasians from middle, middle upper or upper class by the demeanor and language they expressed.

"See I told you so, where is our future leisure class in the making?"

"Ohhh, well, -waiting for the elitist supermen to put the pyramid up side down!"

Xena Crystal Huang Relating to a macro level, one event I would like to share was that last time I took a bereavement leave to go back to Taipei, and on the airplane, within the state, the flight-magazine had a section to advertise Wisconsin (WI). Surely the head of the WI proudly bragged something about the glorious time of WI - the cows, cheeses, Packers, manufacturing industries, the beloved Harvey Davidsons, and the booming business highlighted by several rich CEOs of Wisconsin.

Then, I anxiously kept on reading and searching. I worried what a "great image of WI" carved on this magazine read by many people who could afford to travel via flights to read such an "excellent" portraiture of Wisconsin. I eagerly and gingerly looked for any messages in this article, hopefully, to discover the essential Wisconsin "Ideals" beyond all of the above-mentioned "nice things" regarding this state.

To my great relax, finally I found some words about UW-System ( my uncouth, "snobby or elitist" taste of a specific aesthetic value :)!). Among them, fortunately and unfortunately, "creating the entry-level workers" of the 2-year colleges was highlighted!!! Don't get me wrong - indeed, feeding stomach is more important than burning books.- LCH. So, welcome to visit Wisconsin...

May 31 (Sn), 2015 A prevalent edu-epidemiology in the US.

Crystal Huang
43 mins · Edited ·

Some of the following statements are Crystal's understanding (not academically researched. Personal biases might be unavoidable), based on the attached article.

Is this part of the a capitalistic-socialist plutocratic syndrome???
Behind the false perception of instant rich to purchase edu-credentials from variety of diploma-mills in America...

274,439 Young Santa Clauses from China (31% of all international students in the US, including the daughter of president of China) disguised under academic pursuits to "subsidize" American educational budgetary crisis. Isn't it ironic? What are the consequences?

http://news.yahoo.com/american-universities-addicted-chines… details of this article:

"A startling number of Chinese students are getting kicked out of American colleges. According to a white paper published by WholeRen, a Pittsburgh-based consultancy, an estimated 8,000 students from China were expelled from universities and colleges across the United States in 2013-4. The vast majority of these students—around 80 percent—were removed due to cheating or failing their classes.

As long as universities have existed, students have found a way to get expelled from them. But the prevalence of expulsions of Chinese students should be a source of alarm for American university administrators. According to the Institute of International Education, 274,439 students from China attended school in the United States in 2013-4, a 16 percent jump from the year before. Chinese students represent 31 percent of all international students in the country and contributed an estimated $22 billion to the U.S. economy in 2014.

“American universities are addicted to Chinese students.”

In the past, Chinese students in the United States tended to be graduate students living on tight budgets. Now, a large number of students come from China’s wealthiest and most powerful families—the daughter of President Xi Jinping, for example, studied under an assumed name at Harvard. The presence of wealthy Chinese students at American universities has even caught the attention of luxury brands eager to capitalize on them. Bergdorf Goodman, the New York City-based department store, sponsored Chinese New Year celebrations at NYU and Columbia, while Bloomingdales organized a fashion show for Chinese students at their shopping center in Chicago.

Recommended: The Art of Staying Focused in a Distracting World
Chinese students have become a big market in the United States—and nobody understands this better than the universities themselves. Over 60 percent of Chinese students cover the full cost of an American university education themselves, effectively subsidizing the education of their lower-income American peers. Some schools—such as Purdue University in Indiana—profit further by charging additional fees for international students.

But the symbiotic relationship between cash-strapped American schools and Chinese students is not without its problems. Demand for an overseas education has spawned a cottage industry of businesses in China that help students prepare their applications. The industry is poorly regulated and fraud is rampant. According to Zinch China, an education consulting company, 90 percent of Chinese applicants submit fake recommendations, 70 percent have other people write their essays, 50 percent have forged high school transcripts, and 10 percent list academic awards and other achievements they did not receive. As a result, many students arrive in the U.S. and find that their English isn’t good enough to follow lectures or write papers.

Until recently, American schools have been happy to look the other way.
“American universities are addicted to Chinese students,” Parke Muth, a Virginia-based education consultant with extensive experience in China, told me last year. “They're good test takers. They tend not to get into too much trouble. They're not party animals. The schools are getting a lot of money, and they, frankly, are not doing a lot in terms of orientation.”

Is the relationship between Chinese students and American universities sustainable? The Chinese government has invested billions of dollars in improving its own tertiary education system in an attempt to persuade students to remain in the country.

“China is beefing up their labs, their research, while in the U.S. they've cut back,” said Muth. “At the grad level, students are staying in China because now they're starting to be able to compete.”

For American universities, expelling Chinese students may someday be an overture to a bigger problem—them not coming at all."

Crystal Huang In fact, isn't it a lovely bitter-sweet and love-hate addiction? The mass low-quality-high consumptous students from an instant rich country becomes an inspiration to the edu-economy of the US... but be aware of the latent consequences: the power of human-wave (more properly speaking : Human-Tsunami, remember the Korean War??!!) tactics, now also rampantly invading - the world's FrontLine: Taiwan.

Thanks for sharing some good points and insightful observations. I would like to share some of my thoughts - which could be my biases. Every culture has its ideological freedom and constraints tied to its economic-historical formation and development. How to generalize "而是全體白人, 很多品質已經進入到他們的血液中,甚至形成遺傳基因,他們能成為這個世界事實上統治者..."- Hopefully, not my being 斷章取義- note: there are many kinds of white, Nazi German white, Anglo-Saxon white, Slav white, Hispanic white....and many mixed white as well as 100+ shades go-between...." without committing stereotype (whether positive or negative - a major source of prejudice and discrimination) is not an easy task, though.

昶昶 Indeed, "白" "race" can be good as the article argued. But why? How to make other race/ethnic groups think and behave as good or even better is not impossible. Many factors compound to today's perceptions on the diverse human population.

Generally speaking, there could be the legacies of two historical events that might make "白" people look nicer and behave better today, unless you totally believe in bio-determinant, (as the author pointed out) that I could think of: one could be Industrialization and the other one, maybe, colonialism/imperialism. The global stratification (the inequality in the global scale in terms of colonial plundering on other countries' natural and human resources, enslavement, econ-political domination and repression happening in the colonial era) had existed for more than 300 years in the world history. Some handy examples would be the colonialized Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia, Indian Peninsula.... the most close ones would be Though history may not bear responsibility of how a nation shapes her characters or sense of moralities, not many nations could avoid the major confluences from the larger environment.

The winners and conquers brought back the spoils/trophies (gold, silver, oil, spiciest, slaves, lands, and other precious materials, YES, with their "ingenuity and smartness", plus abundance free goodies and labor forces, they built "clean, polite, 'HONEST', well-educated societies"!!!! - several centuries ahead of other "poor, selfish, dirty, lazy, and immoral" colonialized, pillaged, looted countries... See attached now still happening in the 21st century of Latin America - Indigenous people are fighting for their lands. http://blog.cifor.org/.../for-indigenous-people-in-latin... Ohhh yeees, don't these people look clean, smart, respectful, caring, loving, and well-educated like those "白 race" ????

I agree to the author's idea of education - an expensive national investment which is a key transformation of a nation's human capitals. But not all education leads to proper human development, such as edu-capitalism that may not be, and even worse, its outcome can be against humanity, as a simple example.

Echoing the author's idea: another quick example, if not anecdote, Froebel set up his school in Blankenburg Germany in 1837, later known as the first kindergarten. He called for German women to come together and support the kindergarten to educate the Future Hope of a Nation. Here is pop-quiz for you - If you recall properly what happened during 1837 in Taiwanese, Chinese and Global history????

I am not defending any racial/ethnic, or national entities for their moral or immoral characters/human development. Human beings are adaptable and have capacity to learn and unlearn when proper environment and life chances are available.

As you are familiar to the three major schools of thoughts regarding human nature - do you believe human beings are born to be good, bad, or blank slate? Why? Could a jumpy perception (or stereotype) be treated or thoughts of more cautiously?

April 27 (M), 2015. College Inc. - how does an Edu-enterprise claim bankruptcy?

3 hrs · Edited ·

College Inc. (EduCompanies! How to claim a bankruptcy? ) !! - a tip of educapitalistic iceberg?

A brief on the issues of this Edu-enterprise:
"Corinthian Colleges Inc., the for-profit-college company that was pushed to the brink of collapse last summer when the U.S. Department of Education tightened its financial oversight of the troubled enterprise, announced on Sunday that it had ceased operations and would close all of its remaining 28 campuses as of Monday....

Approximately 16,000 students will be affected by the closures, which involve the Corinthian subsidiaries Everest College, Everest Institute, Herald College, and WyoTech, mostly in California and other western states." See More

Corinthian Colleges Inc. to Close Its Remaining Campuses
The company blamed the move on state and federal penalties and efforts to impose conditions on campus sales. The closures prompted renewed calls for loan forgiveness for Corinthian students.

Selling and buying 95 campuses; tradinig, trends of stock market, resorting to Bankers for "alternative strategies".... these attractive terms permeated in the article - all kinds of everything except EDUCATION !!!

This vast for-profit edu-enterprise has been swallowing 1.4 billion dollars annually of Pell grants from the Federal Government for so long. Seemingly I have been foced to be one of the million culprits - the innocent, loyal, obdient taxpayers contributing to such an edu-plundering business?

Compared to football teams, basketball teams,...or any other Golden- Goose teams, SellingBuying schools like commodities, might not sound extremely profitable, but with Federal government's billions of dollar grants, they are still very attractive and lucrative.

You have one political Party believing in Education for Sale, and the other Party singing "Let it be".... who suffers?
