Feb 24 (M), 2014 Sing Sing A Song - Farewell and Commencement
送別 Farewell (with a brief English translation).
Original song writer: John Pond Ordway
Lyrics : 李叔同 (A monk master)
Somewhere - beyond the Rainbow,
芳草碧連天 the sky kisses the horizon.
Soft breezes indulging in the un-tuned melody,
夕陽山外山 the sunset is racing against the mountains.
In the distant boarder and at the end of the earth,
知交半零落 my dear friends, where are you?
Toss with this glass of sake for the rest of delight,
今宵別夢寒 tonight, leaving you in the frozen dream...
Note:
The original song writer was John Pond Ordway- a 19th century American musician (J•P•奧德威) who wrote the song titled Dreaming of Home and Mother. The song was popular in Japan. A Japanese musician 犬童球溪 modified it into Japanese version of 旅愁 (a nostalgic journey) and published in 1904. Monk Master Li (李叔同- 弘一大師) traveled in Japan as an oversea student (during 1905-10) who was inspired by this song and wrote the above lyrics .
(Dreaming of Home and Mother).

Feb. 16 (Sn), 2014 Crystal's serendipitous teaching-learning-sharing #21 The Magic/Tragic Powers of Socialization and Social Interactions in shaping whom and what one is/could be
about an hour ago
Pedagogical Recipes – sharing! What happened in your Vernacular Sociology class#9 (Feb 13, 2014).
Main themes- Socialization and Social Interaction: How Bio-genetics (positive and negative) and Socio-cultural Forces (positive and negative) shape who and what you are and may be from a renowned CEO's perspective:

Crystal Huang Coming Monday will discuss the above photo from the following 2 true but "anecdotal" stories (personally, I do admire Mr.Gates's entrepreneurship, ingenuity, and success- just borrowing some ideas for classroom activities, nothing personal !)
Here they go:
Story one- I shared a video with my sociology students about Anita’s story last Thursday, who was born into in a lowest and poorest social CASTE in India, even in the 21st century (seemingly, not her mistake- a negatively Ascribed Status), no education, living in a patriarchal society, sold as a young sex slave and then adult prostitute and finally died with AIDS. [Obviously, there was a negative cultural capitals embedded in a highly stratified society/social institutions with a very meager or almost 0% of upward social mobility. Downward or horizontal mobility is the norm].
Wow, was her death a biggest MISTAKE of hers (a negatively Achieved Status - soc jargon !) ???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Story two- one of my fb friends from Taiwan posted the following story to critique Mr. Haru's "wrong attitude" which caused his failure. Seemingly Prince/King Charles is luckier than Mr. Haru, for Charles has a powerful mother and a not-so-week Kingdom waiting for him to reign???
Briefly translated that serendipitous encountering here- An unexpected meeting happened when Prince Charles visited a town and accidentally met with his childhood classmate Mr. Haru who was born into a business-successful upper class ( +White, Male Race, positively ascribed statuses) with a very expensive and glorious academic degree (partially ascribed and partially achieved positive statuses) and successful writing/sport careers [the rich cultural capitals reinforcing individual efforts nurtured by the abundant upward social mobility opportunities/life chances embedded in a elite-supporting system],
But due to his 2 marriage failures and alcoholism (negatively achieved statuses??), he ended up being poor and might have a slim chance to die poor, since he has a terrific prenatal care and nutrition as a child with a healthy and robust early cognitive-physical-sociopsychological development...and so on so forth (does his case happen more often than Anita's ???).

D Eby MSpitz I hate that he is one of the major investors for monsanto - and that he and monsanto are hiding away billions of normal seed from around the world so when GMO seed kills off all regular crops and there are no more normal seed left - he and monsanto will be the only resource left to have regular seed. We will be at their mercy.

Could it be the fault of the Sociological Imagination?
WHY and HOW is so hard to allude to the PRE-conditions of human destiny for being blind to the institutionally constructed realities?

Feb. 14 (F), 2014 Sing Sing A Song Love is patient; Love is Kind
Wooow, what a shameless bragging - My greatest contribution to 2014 Valentine's Day - Sing Sing A Love Song !
This year's Valentine's Day and the Far-Eastern Lantern Festival fall on the same day!
The lyrics of 愛的真諦 was adopted from Corinthians 13:4-8 -
"Love is patient, love is kind.
Love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude.
It does not insist on its own way;
it is not irritable or resentful;
it is the universal golden rule- treat others as you want to be treated;
and rejoices in the truth.
It is accommodating and inclusive,
never losing the faith on humanity and thriving for the better future;
Whenever and wherever there is love, there is life and hope"
- (with minor changes from the original verses).
As a lay-Buddhist, I like these verses from Corinthians.
So I decided to sing it on this Valentine's Day and share with you !!!
