Sept 28 (Th), 2014. From Hong Kong vs. Taiwan: Different Political Entities. Against Plutocracy and undemocratic domination - Hong Kong Students are fighting back!

    Crystal Huang
    40 mins · Edited ·

I put today's thoughts about Hong Kong college students' fighting for their future relating to Taiwan's destiny into one FB note.
With an intention of being less biased, any errors in the following writing are due to my personal inadequacy in this non-academic sharing.
(Note: Perspectives regarding organizers and the relevant sources of mobilization of the whole social movement are beyond the scope of this non-academic chat).

Breaking News - China has mobolized the PLA Garrison Troops (people's "liberation" army) to aim at Hong Kong college students' protest against the plutocratic, anti-democratic practices, and the worsening social inequality.
This gentleman (see the photo attached below) is ready to die for his Hong Kong Democracy and advise SOME wavering people in Taiwan (not exactly identify with Taiwan geo-politically), who have whimsical fantasy of  "西瓜倚大胼" on China, mainly, which means that some people in Taiwan fantasizing the big China that would be nice to them if they express the fondness/loyalty or share business interests. Furthermore, some Chinese immigrants in the mid-30s to late 40s following the Chinese Nationalist Party leaders to Taiwan could still linger with the nostalgic tie with China.

In the early 80s to the late 90s many spearheading Taiwaner/Taiwanese capitalists with successful international business experience earned from 60s to 80s' global trading practices played tremendously catalytic roles to trigger China's economic development. Since Taiwan as an island, the economic activities have been heavily relying on international trades.  The entrepreneurial ingenuity and hardworking are necessary attributes to keep the island economy going, which in turns, exposes the politi-economic vulnerability to the bigger late-economic-blooming countries - such as, China. One of the consequences is -  feeding the hyena that grew up to eat you.

On the other hand, China is on the rise, and is fully aware of - how to maneuver the business-financial strategies (as in Sun Tzu's 孫子兵法 - the Art of War, as simple as 兵不血刃: win the battle without blood shedding: such as via diplomacy, or monetary inducements to Taiwan, perhaps the US, and the rest of the world?) and to provide vast profit incentives to lure more and more Taiwanese capitalists and entrepreneurs deep into the vast land filled with precarious uncertainties.

After China has gone beyond her baby step, walking on her full-fledgling stride, the blue-print of political tactics can never be more obvious. Her economic-inducing strategies could shun away the global peace-watch organizations' attention, reduce the caution and alert of the entrepreneurs and bureaucrats in Taiwan, as well as Avoid the Surveillance from any third parties from the international community that might NOT CONSIDER a unification of Chinese, Hongkongese (or Hongkongers), Taiwanese (prefer to be called Taiwners), and Tibetans providing the best interests to their own country or to the world, such as this familiar cliche of the Sleeping Lioness, said by Napoleon:  "Let China sleep, for when she wakes up, she will shake the world." - intriguing, right?

Some communists/socialists and relevant sympathizers may wish to give China a shot : Let her thrive, due to a complex sentiment of historical conscience /redemption (or guilt??) of the Eight-Nation Alliance (八國聯軍: Austria-Hungary, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) invading an old dying Ching (清 Qing) Dynasty of China during summer of 1900. Subsequently, the Box Uprising (義和團) tossed the country into deep turmoils. Indeed, the long term economic success might lead to the transformation of a totalitarian or fascist regime into a different form of governing, but it might or might not be in the democratic format? The whole world is watching, and let history tell her stories. In reality, majority of Taiwanese are similar to people in Hong Kong, who are fighting for the common destiny, yet, one of the major problems is that some people in Taiwan tend not to identify with Taiwanese common future, lack of the will of solidarity to fight for Taiwan's calling, feeling alienated,  or just treating the major issues as irrelevant events.

For the first generational immigrants, it is understandable of the psychological and socio-cultural ties to the motherland. Then, an interesting phenomenon is that some third (often time, the 2nd) generational immigrants who were born and raised in Taiwan, were educated in Taiwan, have job in Taiwan, sleep in Taiwan, breathe in Taiwan, live in Taiwan, enjoy in Taiwan, but they identify themselves as Chinese. It is quite similar to the 2nd or 3rd generational Americans who recognize themselves or call themselves as Englishmen/Englishwomen, Scandinavians, and the like.  Could there be a cultural hierarchy or hegemony dictating the immigrants' psycho-social adaptation and/or adoption?

Thus, emigration (for those with lands, money, power and other capitals) tends to be an unspeakable resort for escaping from the schizophrenic reality to the state of  "out of sight, out of mind".

Though some of them prefer to be called Chinese, they do not want to be part of China, while the rest, are deeply ingrained with socio-economic conflicting interests and psycho-cultural cognitive dissonance. Having said so, I do respect one of my NTU classmates, who moved to China and has been flourishing there as Chinese.

The referendum of Scotland on Sept 18, 2014 seems such a heavy, smothering, blurry and ambiguous reality to Taiwanese people who are sandwiched among China, the US, and the geo-political hot-spot of the Asia-pacific entanglements.

So this warning phrase on the sandwich board carries heavy thoughts to people in Taiwan.

       It says:
"我是香港人, 請臺灣踏在我們的屍體上- 想你們的路." -  literally translated : "I am a Hongkonger/Hongkongese. If you are a Taiwaner/Taiwanese, please step on our cadavers, and think of your common destiny."

Happy Teachers’ Day!  (Thanks, friends and folks!)

Today is Confucius’ 2565th Birthday.

Do you know approximately 99.999% (1/3000) of his students were either from aristocratic/intellectual background or well-to-do/powerful families?
(Proof, 1/3000, from 論語 :  "弟子三千, 成德達才者, 七十二", From the Analects of Confucius, literally, "I have 3,000 students. Among them, 72 reached their potential".)

Surely all male gender – not so much different from Socrates’.

So, more than two thousand and five hundred years later,  is today's 1% vs. 99% an astonishing phenomenon?

Note - That only 1, so far we know is 顏回 – a really poor but super intelligent student. Unfortunately he died very young, who broke Confucius’ heart (does social class have some correlations with the health condition?)

Crystal Huang Sometimes,, I wish I could invite Confucius or Socrates to come to Technical Colleges or my classrooms to meet the truly DIVERSE students, and learn from them how to flip, how to differentiate, and how to meet the diverse needs from their pedagogy that I can borrow or adopt to be a truly successful educator !

Julie Yollin Berk in the Western welfare state, people are paid to do nothing
9 hrs · Unlike · 1

Crystal Huang @Julie, indeed, there are two major kinds of welfare subsidy : the very much "Visible" welfare for people who might lose job due to outsourcing, downsizing, layoff, disability, family tragedies, disabled vets (some of them, hopefully, not heartlessly to say- fighting for the big Oil corporate companies, sacrificing for other profiteering enterprises under the name of falsified patriotism, and the artificial unemployment), perpetual poverty (culture of poverty and 40 million living under the poverty line now), lack of education opportunity, and the rest of socio-enonomic problems imposing on the vulnerable powerless.

The other kind of "Huge yet Invisible" Corporate welfare (for example, "X"/mart), which takes away billions of dollars from the loyal, innocent, hardworking taxpayers (in particular, the drowning middle class that supports the top and the bottom) under the name of creating many repressive, poverty-line-style of low wage jobs, which, ironically need government's food stamps as subsidy for the low wage workers to get by (not the mention the health care!!). There are Double, Triple Subsidies to some Huge Corporate companies which dominate tremendous political power behind the scene to control Government and its politicians/lobbyists (including the Supreme Court!!),  and these hidden transactions tend not to be seen in the neck of woods.

Yes, we do see a small portion of bad apples that abuse the system and reinforce the stereotype, such as using food stamps in inappropriate ways or students taking financial aids and not attending classes...etc. These small "bad apples" tend to be used by some politicians/lobbyists as powerful cards and excuses to stop or cut off the necessary assistance to the powerless (one of them, cutting educational funding, but with trillion dollars to feed the business-military-industrial complex) that any humane and civilized societies/governments need to do, such as providing people's education and health care as the two basic tasks.

Crystal Huang @Julie, I forgot - you are from UK! This is merely a non-academic chatting about a tip of the welfare iceberg in the US. Many EU nations and citizens endure centuries' religious establishment, aristocratic domination, as well as the feudal and Monarchical practices which are quite different from how the US was born and thrives. Thus, the social hierarchy/stratification has profound impact on the current setting in UK (and the similar type of governments in EU) which tells a little bit different stories from the US' ?

Julie Yollin Berk Europe is/getting much more capitalistic. For ordinary people (as you say the drowning middle class) I don't think those issues have an impact on their lives. A very important issue that does affect them is immigration. I won't get into that as it's so huge it can't be discussed on FB.
