Sept 23 (F), 2016. Culture: Freedom vs. Constraints from functional and conflict perspectives

Xena Sun-Lasting Huang

As an instructor/educator, I ask all of my classes to do daily journal entries (with required texts, imagery, and hyperlinks) to document learning processes and for a portfolio project.
I do the same thing. Here is my journal entry of the day:
~ Art, Sociology, and Social Constructionism ~ Serial entries #25
Today's topics in Art Appreciation vs. Sociology: Culture functions as: constraints/ideologies vs. freedom/way of life;
as: ethnocentrism vs. cultural relativism

Sept 21 (W), 2016. Language pragmatism and hierarchy.

Xena Sun-Lasting Huang

 ~ Language : Diversity vs. Universality ~ Art and Sociology series#24

Emphasizing the top ingredient among the 5 of the cultural recipe: Language.
I "seduce" students to commit (or take seriously) to 2 of the most "pragmatic" languages in the US and to the world during covering Chap 3-Culture, Sociology.
Several students asked : why not offer Mandarin and culturally related subject matter... (after you have looked at this language chart and to figure out how and why these 2 languages rose to the top? What about a revival of Esperanto - a constructed international auxiliary language?)

James Kimbrough Xena, I wanted to learn mandarin back at a very young age ( 13) my " European bloodline " teacher asked me back then ( 1975?) - "what do you need that language for??" 2016 shows me I was right -- he was a social conditioning " hack" to my intuitions. 🎓🌍

Xena Sun-Lasting Huang James, in fact, today, in my sociology class, I shared the similar story. In 2001, I taught at UW-Stout, and at that time, a "sun" only showed a tiny rising sign (the other Sun has risen at least 30 years ahead of the current one). I asked students to commit themselves to two important (pragmatic) languages when I covered Culture. The "pragmatic seduction" was to "fit the educational mission statement". In fact, a non-pragmatic 2nd or 3rd language might "make the world happier :)!?"

~ Serendipitous teaching-learning-sharing ~ series #21

"Sociology" and "Art (Visual) Appreciation", these two courses reinforce each other well with two of their commonalities - philosophical (if not revolutionary :)!) imagination and structural insights.

During last two weeks, we worked hard to open up 3 sociological big eyes differentiated into more than 15 smaller mind-eyes to exam any social phenomena from various angles.
Today, an imaginative topic popped out:

What if Trump had taken Sociology, whether seriously or not, then....
