Crystal LC Huang I finished Olson's. The other one, sounds good read too.
Ms. Olson is a painter, writer, guitarist, dancer, gardener, volunteer, and if I read thoroughly, a social justice activist/protester (so far as I know.) She has been volunteering to a local animal shelter for 12 years. Her husband Willem Gebben is a ceramic artist. They live in Colfax, WI. I met them 3 days ago.

Crystal LC Huang The book has spicy tone which was set during the rise of a divisive, ambitious (aiming at the presidency from the day one of his office, on the springboard of WI), bomb-dropping politician. But most of the contents are about the shelter, while, politics and sports were just a tiny side bar of the stories, alas....

What a dad....! I really want to give him a hug...

The mommy said to her husband, " Honey, I am going to power my nose. Watch babies for a couple of minutes!"

Husband, "Groping his watch, already 2 minutes and 1 second....Hey...where are you..."

The babies, " Dad, be patient with mom. You scared me out of my butt....Mommy, Mommy, Mommy....help, hurry, hurry...."

Mommy heard the babies' siren, dashing back..."DAMN you!!!!! If you don't like your kids, next time, with your condoms ready @#$%^&*!!!"

Nov. 25 (F), 2016. Pay-checks vs. Reality-checks

Crystal LC Huang
1 hr ·

Keep life simple: beside grading and preparation,
just finished reading 2 books during the holiday break:
The Politics of Resentment, and Ringside Seat.

Politics of Resentment - Rural consciousness in Wisconsin and the Rise of...

Why do some voters cast ballots to against their best interests, particularly, in the rural areas (in this case, WI, and nation-wide, the bible belt), typically stereotyped as the less politically informed social strata?

The researcher investigated the conventional views on the "poorly informed" voters perceived with an invisible "class-based, less-educated, and ignorant" mindset reflecting on their voting patterns.

According to the political scientist prof. Cramer, the public opinions of ruralists expressed through their rural identity, not exactly ideology,  reinforced by the divide and conquer tactics goes along with a vague social class notion and resentment. The rural voters resent the elitism/intellects, of whom, most occupy the public sectors, particularly, in the educational institutions. Rural residents resent the undeserving, keep-finger-clean public employees, especially "teachers", devouring the big portion of the state revenue, while the hard-working folks like them were neglected in sharing the national productivity. The long-term-divided line between the private sector vs. the public sector felt by the rural residents was intensified by the outside Dark Money via an ambitious politician creates a phenomenal politics in Wisconsin.

Questions:
How was the rural identity/consciousness shaped in Wisconsin?
What kind of political socialization processes (the formation of political ideology, in particular) reinforces the rural identities?
What are the differences of rural identities among the red states vs. blue states?
If the same project done from the perspective of Sociology of Politics, what may the results look like?

For Ringside Seat, the quality and quantity of bipartisanship in Madison and citizen participation have been declining drastically, especially, after 2011 in WI, according to the author- Senator Tim Cullen who traced back from the 1950s to his 2nd return to Madison ended in 2015. His political memoir illustrates the daunting task for being a mediator between two parties, in particular, an extremely polarized, like the current one.

The current exceptional polarization of WI politics deviates from the conventional "containment policy" practiced by the previous 12 governors (6 Reps, and 6 Dems). The confluence of Dark Money provided by the interest groups from outside of the state, individual's political ambition, the accumulated rural resentments, outsourcing/recession, unemployment, the politically designed novelty (such as, dropping unexpected political bombs), the "government has no discipline", "Capitalism has no heart" ( such as the excessive gerrymandering and the voter suppression), media tied to the super PAC and so on burst into an unprecedented political macabre in this used-to-be ultramarine-blue state.

The author holds optimistic view toward current political aberration as a page of the Wisconsin's political tome.

Crystal LC Huang Abu Tay Tay, I wrote brief reviews on these two books just now, one by an academic and the other one by a politician, posted on my blog.
The Resentment one was research-oriented, while senator Tim Cullen's Ringside Seat - a political memoir, was written in a reader friendly way.

Crystal LC Huang Since I did not get the opportunity to post this question before Thanksgiving, hope still making sense to ask this naive one-
Why does the president get the right to pardon a turkey (turkeys)?
Shouldn't the right prevail to all - We, the People :D!?
Like · Reply · 18 mins · Edited

Crystal LC Huang Just curious - How many families pardoned a turkey(s) even the right was not officially "granted" to us, the people :)!?
Why not the president pardoned all the turkeys, and then all the fins, claws, wings, hooves, paws and the rest of multiple-leggies?

Will s/he lose the popularity from the farms and their chained businesses, or "ruin" the savory turkey appetite?

Crystal LC Huang During last week of my Sociology classes , one of the hot-button-issue projects was about the evolution of human rights to animal rights presented by Elizabeth and Rachel (not surprisingly, they both are vegetarians). It reminds me of the renowned philosophy scholar - Peter Singer - Animal liberation is the end of human suffering.

Seemingly, he and the Buddha share the similar thoughts - both using logic elaboration and philosophical reasoning to make the claim.
