May 20 (Sa), 2017. Why does teaching have so much fun ?!
2 hrs ·
What's on my mind? - FB Inc. wants to know...
Well, time to sing and dance again after having submitted the final grades of 4 classes of Diversity Studies (both online and face-to-face), 1 class of Art Appreciation, 1 Introduction to Sociology, and 1 transfer level of Sociology. Majority of students did very well. I enjoyed various challenges throughout this academic year!
Patting on my own back !

Xena Hlc For the Art Appreciation class, there were only a couple of cases relevant to the current political controversies (part of the basic theories of art criticism - students practiced on the chosen cases). But there were more about the religious one: some students dislike how modern and post-modern art challenge (some called, "blaspheme" ) the notions regarding the established religions, in particular, related to their religion and the Medieval/Byzantine arts.
How easy or challenging to rationally debate or discuss both the "political correctness and incorrectness" regarding various historically institutionalized ideologies embedded in these non-natural science courses in the small towns of the Midwest territory (even some natural sciences cannot escape the religious-political-ideological scrutiny)!!! What about situated in the 2-year tech college setting? How much is the politically correct and incorrect sentiment happening in the classrooms, and in the students' course and learning evaluation? How much do the administrators listen into tech colleges students' wisdom versus faculty's expertise in evaluating numerous intended and unintended ideological controversies.
These are nothing new, just repeated and recycled in different eras of history. In the ancient Greece, Protagoras has pointed out the "doctrine" that man is the measure of all things. He determines what it is and what is not . He proclaims that each man is the measure of all things, and that, when men differ, there is no objective truth in virtue of which one is right and the other wrong. Then, Theaetetus, interprets Protagoras, that one opinion can be better than another, though it cannot be truer.
Furthermore, Thrasymachus argues that there is no justice except the interest of the stronger; that laws are made by governments for their own advantage; and that there is no impersonal standard to which to appeal in contests for power. Added up by Callicles, according to Plato, he maintains a similar "doctrine". In short, the law of nature, Callicle says, is the law of the stronger; but for convenience, men have established institutions and moral precepts to restrain the strong.
In this sense, Social Darwinism was not Herbert Spencer's honest idea, but recycled from Charles Darwin and those ancient sophists' notions and propagated throughout human history, culminating now than ever.
Thus, debating the universal vs. relativism ethics/morality, or essentialism vs. constructionism has been the everlasting brain-teasing business of the elite societies.
Are there differences regarding aforementioned controversies between same courses and contents taught/facilitated by a native-English-speaking vs. a non-native-English-speaking faculty (such as, me) under current politically farcical climate?
Re-post: How and why is teaching Diversity Studies such a risky business?
Why doesn't the Federal Government shut down Diversity Study courses?
Indeed, the anti-multiculturalism, anti-inclusion, and the ideological political-correct/in-correct parties raucously propagandize Social Darwinism, ignoring most students who are not saints, nor the fittest survivors on the top of the food-chain, but still in their learning processes.
Is there such a thing, called "to err is human?"
So, what are the rationales or hidden agenda behind all these anti-human diversity issues?
It reminds me of a couple years ago, one of my office-mates told students that the US only had ethnic issues but not the racial one, while the other 2 colleagues (office-mates too) refused/skipped to teach gender/sexuality themes in order to keep their religious integrity.
Is there such a thing called "Freedom of Speech" exercised and demonstrated by these faculty,
or whether "progressively vs. regressively" enough, in terms of time, preparation, interest,
debated and discussed by/with students?
These events are just one glimpse to reveal how exciting it is in facilitating Diversity course, in particular, by a non-native English-speaking faculty at a Technical college setting. ( I can write a whole book about this journey of my pilgrimage).
Xena Hlc Another shameless self back-patting event: Through 2 semesters' ideation, designing, developing, experimenting, modification, evaluation, and delivery, the Art Appreciation (Intro to Visual arts) curriculum, from the scratch to the completed version, was finalized.

In fact, I feel less discomforted when students confused the differences between Civil War and Civil Rights Movements in my Diversity Studies classes, after I heard the current president said that Andrew Jackson would have stopped the Civil War....
(Note, I do admire his self-aware honesty - an excellent quality, rarely found among the smart or the powerful people ! - see below).

Crystal LC Huang See, FB Inc. just took off the "share" icon (so to the other post after my sincere accolades to the FB Inc, see my previous posts). Indeed, there is no such exciting items, such as butts, boobs, or things like "I drank my milk, and then went to work"...etc. can be found or shared from my timeline for the divine entertaining !

Crystal LC Huang Well, seemingly I am under a great attention of the FB Inc. segment- manager? After a minor sweet-explanation of my post (see above), then the "share" icon was suddenly, popped out!
Don't forget, you get paid by monitoring FBers' obedience, but I am a duped doodler, self-enslaved for the FB Inc. - for free !

May 6 (Sa) 2017. Pop quiz for today; A short answer, regarding "Like"...
Pop quiz for today: A short answer
What and why does Facebook Corporate company want to Manipulate your/others' posts by this intriguing button called "Like"?

Crystal LC Huang Here are some attractive, if not interesting reasons so far I have collected (Please share your observations) !
Reason#1- Force you to like your own posts, for the FB Inc. does not want you to be lonely?
Reason#2 - Only "like" those who like your posts, so the FB Inc. will enact NCLB
(No Clickers Left Behind)?
Reason#3 - To please, glorify, or worship your bosses, your managers, and whoever has power over
you, so the FB Inc. can see who is on the top of the food chain?
Reason#4 - To be part of the great collective consciousness and maze, such as million likes to K.
Kardashian's butt/Beyonce's swollen tummy, your cat purchasing a new tiara, or your
baby's diapers tinted with Poopon, so the FB Inc. shall reinforce such a fantastic
popular culture?
Reason#5 - To show off what an adorable/hated/envied "smarter/nobler than you" genius, wise-man or successful snob
you are, so FB Inc. will enhance such an interesting human psyche to attract more clienteles ?
Reason#6 - To show that everyone is a socio-economic-political pundit, if not a junkie, if you want,
so the FB Inc. can prove that everyone can be (if not, will be) the current (or future?) US
president?
Reason#7 - Self-mental therapy (safe valves?) to rant/cathart on your timeline, so FB Inc, indeed
reduces members in the overcrowded mental institutions?
Reason#8 - Daily/routine monologues and self-exposure to fill up Facebook company's memory
storage, so the FB Inc. is able to harvest the free, BIG, volunteered data and sell them
gingerly and wisely?
Reason#9 - For the FB stock holders, the FB Inc. will not let you down to maintain, if not boost up
FB stock market value, by any means?
Reason#10 - Welcome "secret agent men, such as FBICIA" to appreciate your contributions to ____?
A serendipitous feature of the FB Inc.?
Will be continued...

Crystal LC Huang Your turns to share?? Am I in my early dementia - mistakenly thinking that this is an on-line class' collaboration !?

Crystal LC Huang After a short break, now continuing this dialogue (monologue?)
Reason#11 Watch out the saints, sages, wise-people who are reluctantly hidden under no "likes" or
minimally liked. Doesn't the FB Inc. need these tiny voices to counter balance its
hedonistic popular culture?
Reason#12 - The FB timeline user-producers can be lonelier than the FB info user-consumers.
Doesn't the FB Inc. wish that you are able to sympathize those spending time on
producing something for better-or-worse, and/or for diversity ?
Reason#13 - Aren't the FB timeline info or new-reel user-transmitters/sharers/taggers happy bees -
helping the hard working user-producers, within a second, viola, the great deed of
pollination - being done?
Reason#14 - Isn't the FB Inc. content that some of the fb users are proper pro-sumers (free, voluntary,
happy-slave), accelerating the FB business' profit exponentially?
Reason#15 - Aren't the FB Inc.' gamers the big lonely crowd, who make fortune, connections,
excitement, mental-healing...etc. on the cyberspace, and solve many types of social
problems, social inequality, virtually?
Stay tuned...

Crystal LC Huang Not too late for joining CVTC Art Club to share ideas, creativity and experiences.
Meet: Every Tuesday. 4:00-7:00 pm. at BEC 230, Eau Claire.
So far, we only offer one visual art class - a general survey type, while seemingly many students are interested in studio art courses too.
So, who else would like to be the Art Club advisor? I would like to collaborate with you !

Crystal LC Huang Today, in one of my sociology classes, under a tiny fit of the early Alzheimer's teasing, we successfully discussed and analyzed Education as a pivotal social institution through functional and conflict perspectives. I also shared some of my perceptions and experiences about 2-year college vs. 4-year college teaching. Are you curious to know?
O.K., let me unselfishly share such a secret: in short, my previous teaching at universities in the Midwest with a Master degree I carried out my job pretty well - from my personal bias, while, later (maybe, moola could be a blame) I realize it takes 1.5 Ph.Ds, 3 Masters' and 1.75 Bachelor degrees just to keep my head above the flare during 14 years' teaching at a Technical college setting ! Ohh yes, it is exciting, challenging with lots of fun : via a 3rd language -that's the real, holy secret ! If you are interested in this episode, refer to https://ci8395.blogspot.com/.../april-13-r-climate-for.html - one of my blogs.
Crystal LC Huang Does Joe Biden say that the 2-year college is the US' Secret Weapon? A WMC : Weapons of Mass Construction? Mmm...Construct...? Secret, secret... ooohhh reminds me of Johnny River's song : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iaR3WO71j4

This is a Memorial Endowment Scholarship set up at CVTC in honor of the most important person in my life: Li-ling Huang.(黃麗玲) : my dearest baby-sister.
She bravely overcomes her socio-economic adversities, and puts her heart and soul in helping the less fortunate people. She advocates for human-animal rights and the earthjustice, and is a community organizer and social justice activist. She works though all her life for the better society until the day she returns to the multiverse on July 3rd, 2016 at the age of 52.

Crystal LC Huang I remember Karrie right away at the reception banquet tonight. I was so touched by her field-study statement. A great learner, devoted mother with high academic achievements. I believe she will be a very caring and professional nurse in the near future.

This Diversity Endowment was set up in 2007 after my mother passed away (her last name is Tsai 蔡). I respect and was amazed by my parents who never got any bit of education, nor job skills during Japan's occupation on Taiwan, raising 10 kids with the best they could. In particular, my mother, she was an "illiterate" who could not read nor write, but believed in that the opportunity for a child to learn how to read and write can change his/her destiny, which was a ground-breaking idea among her contemporaries at that time.
Crystal LC Huang I just knew Molly was awarded this scholarship. I admire her career goals and ambition to take care of our environment for the sustainable concerns (I am a notorious dirt-lover and tree-hugger... too !) I am so happy for her that she won this scholarship.

(During the above teaching career, I also completed my terminal degree in 2015 through being a part-time student for 10 years.
