Oct 10 (Sa) 2015. An Ambivalent National Holiday!

Crystal Huang
52 mins · Edited ·

Happy Taiwan National Festival: Celebrating the Double 10th Day (10, 10, 2015)...
Do you know which Nation's birthday falls on October 10th?

Just curious, how many are not being challenged/confused with a little bit of political-cognitive-dissonance on this ambivalent holiday ? - such as: "Was" Taiwan born yet? vs. When is Taiwan's Birthday? - compared to China's birthday which is 1st of October. Then, who should really enjoy celebrating the birthday on October 10th (the day Dr. Sun Yat-sen 孫逸仙 overthrew the Manchurian's' kingdom-Ching Dynasty in 1911) for what??

Believe it or not: This is the one of the most tricky and shambolic parts of HUMAN HISTORY ever happening on this Planet in Taiwan entangled in this international mess for many decades!!!!!!

Then what does it mean Oct. 25th- "Recovery" Day of Taiwan? Recovering from what/whom to where for what? (Sort of funny, I was supposed to be flunked on the National Entrance Examination for college (大學聯考) on History (one of 6 the subject matters/disciplines or courses which are designated by the Department of Education via the National Entrance examination committee. Prospective students will be assigned a college based on the earned scores). Regarding the History exam, mainly was about "China" and World History, for, people in Taiwan, were prohibited to learn History of Taiwan...), instead I earned a lucky/ambivalent Full (100 out of 100) score. Ironic, wasn't it !?Share

Crystal Huang One highlight of the celebration: The tradition is still on, the color guard team - my dear ideological stronghold- Alma Mater Taipei Municipal First Girls' High - long time ago... The "Power" of Education, if not "training"... Most girls admitted to this type of schools, usually, have to go through an "inhumane" style of throat-cutting competition - I meant in the past. Hopefully, now is getting better...

Crystal Huang Brought me back to my Once Upon A Time: The months' training outside classroom for the Double Tenth Day... Hail to the "invisible King"... ( Ya, me, that little innocent high school girl, hailed and hailed a lot, no less than any girls who grew up in those repressive regimes in most part of Far-Eastern, Southern, Central, and Middle Asia).

I was never taught/learned that I had a brain, or I could have the capacity to own a brain - both in my family and schools - the 2 most powerful social institutions during those days at my home and in a couple of "renowned" schools (ya, including NTU)... like many girls (except those born into the top 1 to 5% lucky girls with a great amount of cultural capitals and life chances) in this part of Asia, I guess...- could be my biases...

(Note, in particular, when the local people were forced to live with the White Terror.... oh, yes, similar to McCarthyism plus a real Fascist Regime during that time).

Indeed, under the well-packaged image of "socio-economic stability", the price paid by the local people was immeasurable...

Who says that the pen is mightier than the sword?

Pentagon is taking actions to fix part of the Edu-Capitalistic problems!!!! Maybe when other civilized approaches are exhausted, the military-industrial-complex can funciton as an effective alternative approach?

Oct 9 (F), 2015. Imaginative sustainability vs. reality

Wish I could rent/borrow/own one, don't you???
Desire to get rid of all sorts of artificial consumption and the unnecessary burden carried with me for so long... In reality, need to look up to the all sorts of grid/symbiotic businesses of electric/gas Energy, real estate, insurance, taxation and the rest of love-n-hate of home-ownership and the rest of family (if having one) issues... if they "agree" to such a fantastic idea.
Reminds me of several decades ago how the hybrid car models were abandoned...

Crystal Huang My dear colleague Marcie, sure. Have a nice afternoon !

Crystal Huang Why Students' club event is such an extremely exciting phenomenon- almost, "miracle"? Why? Because we turn "adversity into joy"; we have magic wands to convert frugality into abundance !!! BUT HOW? (I need to reserve these stories for another time. Stay tuned :)!).

Students' Clubs, in fact, might not be the luxurious items for the typical 4-year universities !!! But at -2-year Technical Colleges, the stories can be quite interesting and fascinating identified when I left a 4-year to experience and explore such a 2-year environment.

Just imagine, most of our students having multiple jobs, taking many courses (some with double, triple majors), some, being parents (I did have some grandparent students before), engaging in many life events with all sorts human conditions (some are dramatic, while others traumatic, going on and on...), commuting to school (we don't have dormitories, nor auditorium. No student centers, no sport fields - surely, no locker rooms for body-buddy, heart-n-soul interactions of the baseball, football, basketball, soccer, track-n-fields teams. Ya, swimming teams, indoor-pool and gyms, not a bad idea... who doesn't like them, not to mention hockey ring or cheer-leader teams.... Of course, no such things as magnificent college imagery with old handsome trees hugging the gorgeous campus dotted with endless yards and four-season gardens.... (Don't get me wrong, you should not be misled into the jail or prison scenes. Not that kind of things..... :)! ) My campus, in fact, looks cute and lovely- I enjoy walking around her.

Give you a vivid description: the size of a track-n-field plus one of the dormitories of our neighboring university is almost bigger than our main campus.

These general items and scenes mentioned above, don't we all know very well - comprising the basic quality to the so- called: "College" ?

Meanwhile, faculty members are teaching 18 to 21 credits (average 7 classes per semester, 14 classes or 42 credits per academic year). My current cute office is shared by 8 colleagues. My neighboring one, a little bit bigger than our office was newly remodeled to suppose to "contains" 20 faculty and staff (we are all very close to the heart of our beloved earth - in the deep basement). To make it concrete: I sweetly recalled when I was a TA as an art student, my own grad office is almost the same size of my current one which is shared by 8 instructors in a cute open space (every faculty can see what other colleagues are typing on the screen!!! - no need to bother Big Brother!) Then, me, as a loud person (a school-redneck??), talking/chatting in my office is almost equivalent to commit a crime or disturb the social order. I do learn to refrain myself, and wish that my accent were as cute or beautiful as a canary ( my last name is Huang, means yellow), so no one is tortured in my presence. These tiny descriptions or daily anecdotes could be just a tip of the hardware iceberg. For the software part of stories, again, saved for another time. Stay tuned.

My dear taxpaying friends (including myself), aren't these students and instructors truly the money-saving machines :D!? I was just luckily enough to have time to capture today's exciting Club Fair!!!

This is the most cheapest as well as extremely expensive edu-mechanism existing in the PK-16 system. Shouldn't the current Powerful Politicians and their symbiotic "Proteges or Liaisons" handle the less fortunate students and educators with a little bit of consciousness or conscientiousness when a silenced campus  is deemed as a great success of educational accountability?
