The "Free-Trade" Mantra (could it be interpret it as the Surplus Profiteering extracted from the Cheap Human Machines?) of the multiple waves of the Economic Globalization now has gradually been the talisman of the Dominant Asian Countries, repeating what happened in the last few centuries' European models toward Latin America, Africa and Southeast Asia. Again, reminds me of lots of sad memories we have experienced when we were kids in Taiwan..

May 13 (T), 2014 Repost - An English, A Mandarin and A Taiwanese Version of the Gettysburg Address

Here are 3 versions of  the Gettysburg Address.

President Lincoln's powerful words are still across time and space addressing to many people and countries, in particular, to People in Taiwan!!

Echoed Ken Burns' recent video (everyone is encouraged to recite and record the Address. So I did), aired on PBS April 16, 2014. The film tells the story of a tiny school in Putney Vermont, the Greenwood School, where each year the students are encouraged to practice, memorize, and recite the Gettysburg Address. In its exploration of the Greenwood School, the film also unlocks the history, context and importance of President Lincoln's most powerful address.

In fact, I recorded these 3 versions the day before the Earth Day. Since my previous post somewhat tied to tge accent, I listened my recorded clips again and decided to make the fresh ones.  I am planning to make it a learning activity for the coming semester, so, I have been my own guinea pig thus far.

Nowadays, people in Taiwan are so versed in Mandarin, English or Japanese, thus, Taiwanese language could become an endangered species... Recalling when I was a kid in the elementary school, speaking Taiwanese would get punished.... Were all languages created equal??? - another man-made hierarchy based on certain ideological hegemony.

Guess, which one is the best sketch of me, now ?? Exxxxxxxxactly!!!!

I am worse than the one on the right- but much more relaxed after having submitted all the final grades ! Indeed, teaching can be a bitter-sweet business :)!

Just done a physical therapy for the over-stressed/sore shoulders, painful neck, ringing ears, and need to replenish some lost hours due to insomnia and reconstruct the blurry eye-sight (but not all relating to school affairs, in particular, reading-grading papers/project...etc., I guess?)

Mmm... one more thing, you were evaluated by students (they looked no better than the one on the right either, after this long treacherous winter...) at this stage when you had exhausted all sorts of the funny energy, nor adorable, likable, or beautiful, magical...not like the left hand-side one any more... regardless, your accent, teaching styles, national origin, race/ethnicity, age, how tough the disciplines...and so on so forth !

These TOO, Shall Have Passed !

Adding a short note here, since using a 3rd language to teach Social Sciences, instead of Computer Science, Math or Engineering (as most of the non-native-English-speaking-instructors do), I would like to share a couple of my linguistic double-consciousnesses regarding using English in teaching not-quite-straightforward-social studies:

God bless the Mid-Westerners who are used to speaking, and more importantly, listening to, so-called the beautiful, standard English. Our neighboring states, such as the Minnesotan's (counted as a midwest state as well?) accent, sometimes can be detected :D, such as yap, yep, ya...!

As to me, it is a privilege to learn to be used to listening to the Standardized English, and might have been demanded to speak one (will explain in another note below), even though I came to US as an international student at the age of 35. Obviously, to get rid of this god-given Precious accent is like the camel going through the needle's eye!

Interestingly speaking, when I was in Madison/Twin Cities (as a student), or visited East and West coats, I was just perfectly with my English with a "very cute, beautiful, and intellectual" accent, while coming back to the Midwest reality, it just becomes an outstanding challenge to be aware of - I count this awareness being an entitlement, if not a privilege as well.

In this case, as the very ONLY faculty among more than 300 instructors and staff, who speaks
with a "Non-British type" of accent, and you can imagine how much inviting/uninviting and intentional/unintentional attention you have to receive or be aware on a daily basis/bliss :)!! Would this be a double-blessing, fortunately and unfortunately?? The ambient stress (or the joy under the limelight :)?), sometimes, can be immeasurable. The only way she could render on her daily teaching is just to squeeze out the very last drop of teaching energy with all possible endeavors to compensate this "specific endowment" that she has no way to change it. And the good news is that, in the long run, she could "run the same race" via numerous student surveys and evaluations with the rest of 99.97% of native-English Speaking faculty and adjuncts without being discredited the "dearly unique accent" too much about her ability as a competent educator (for example, with 4 nominations and earned 2 excellent teaching awards -mmm... can you detect anything wrong with this shameless self-aggrandizing courage : ) :D !??).

Having said so, I am still quite happy to serve as many of my students' very first foreign guinea pig. For those who come from mini-cities or farm-towns with population of 300 to 1,000ishness, I have been a good candidate for them to interact with as an instructor without falling into the trap of Xenophobia :)! Nonetheless, compared to most of other unique beliefs, norms, and all sorts of "specific" ideologies of them (could be mine, too, since I am teaching "Liberal Arts" courses), accent is just a very very tiny hot potato :D!

So, during the very first session of all of my classes, I tend to joke, convince ( or, calm down...) students that people speak with accent are not all stupid or frightening, such as President JFK, or President Bush :D!   Furthermore, many foreign Presidents who visit the USA, and are able to speak English with all sorts of accents, are not all dim-witted or make people uncomfortable, either :D!

In the nutshell, this is also the environment that I have been facilitating one of the very interesting, if not challenging courses of - Race/Ethnicity and Diversity Studies. I am also quite blessed that I have the opportunities to serve as the only racial, ethnic, age, (perhaps, faith, and national origin...etc.) Minority in many classes of many semesters during past 17 years' teaching in the Midwest regions.

Fortunately, on this land of multiple-waves of diverse immigrants, I gradually see the growth of understanding and accepting "diversity" in race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexual orientation, disability, accent (is this aspect counted as part of "disability"?)  faith/religion and the rest of diverse themes with various intersectionalities, slowly, gradually, but definitely, which is quite intimidating to those who still insist to go back to the "pure-blood-one-race" mandate, regardless other dimensions of diversity.


Another short note- During my last 17 years of teaching at 1 college and 2 universities (plus, my own studies at UW-Madison and University of Minnesota-Twin Cities), I was quite baffled that a school's administrator who invited me for a talk during the 2nd month after I was hired.  The kindness of this administrator was to suggest me to Correct my Accent and recommended me to see a Language Pathologist for such a correction :D!  I suspected that I might have been the very first foreign born instructor that this person had ever encountered during his/her career as a school leader??

The solution was - I did consult a specialist who suggested me to listen to songs carefully, and sing, which might help. This could be another reason why I enjoy singing so much :)! A blessing in disguise?!

In conclusion, both teaching and learning are privileges, especially, mine.

May 4 (Sn), 2014 Who are the secret winners and the brain-murderers of The Brave Digital World?

When browsing some info, accidentally I found a typo and tried to fix it in the following previous post "April 5 (Sa), 2014   A penny for your thoughts! - 'All it will take for evil to prevail is for good people to do not' " and then stumbling upon a Google+ friend's post regarding a man's Unique type of FUNNY HIGH CRIMES AND/OR MISDEMEANORS which was not only never prosecuted and will soon harvest tons of benefits from the sweats and blood of the Taiwanese taxpayers.

Here is the original paragraph in the April 5 with the new updated info A penny for your thoughts! - 'All it will take for evil to prevail is for good people to do not':

The next question is that how many people in Taiwan Want or Need to be Chinese (move to China)?

Adding a short note (May 4, 2014): upon revising this paragraph, I stumbled on a message that this China-mainland immigrant in Taiwan who worked as a consul to the US a few years ago, using a pseudonym (氾藍青) to derogate Taiwanese people as the low-class Island Ghosts and 賤民 as well as  the rest of ANTI-TAIWAN public expressions. Ironically, it was a pity as well as a sympathy to forgive this type of population who have no interest (except money and power exploited from Taiwan), nor understanding about the History of Taiwan and the pains/suffering which Taiwanese people have been enduring for 6 decades to feed and nurture the 1.8 million early CHINESE REFUGEE IMMIGRANTS to Taiwan when their leader lost China to Communists. Unfortunately, this sort of  political-economically inertial regime's fiasco mingling with the cultural Chauvinism hybridized a weird dominant political system: the economic low-end with political high power on the economic high-end without the power.

His job was paid by the Taiwanese taxpayers as a public service staff (as a typical example of many oxymoronic "rank-and-file Chinese Refugee" Immigrant in Taiwan), and then he bit the hands that fed him.WHY was this type of high crimes and/or misdemeanors of TREASON not prosecuted !!!!????? This sort of yellow dogs parasitically occupying in Taiwan is another econo-political cancerous cells tolling on Taiwan's socio-economic health - exploiting Taiwan's every bit of socio-economic resources and benefits to monopolize the most important political resources and then fawning over China.

The most unbelievable thing to drop your jaw is that the his crony Nationalist government would strategically design a spacial high rank official-position for him to symbolically take on to possess a huge retirement package (2 months before he would "retire"), supported by the hardworking Taiwanese taxpayers, while the outsourcing, downsizing and the historical high unemployment rate have been eroding the hope and future of the most Taiwanese working class!! Doesn't HE deserve to be IN PRISON for his funny type of high crimes and/or misdemeanors to Condescend Taiwan that offered him job and paid him so well? Is there any individual capable enough to stop his continuing exploiting TAIWANESE TAXPAYERS? What sort of Government have you ever heard off that conspires with its culprits to exploit Taiwanese people to benefit an at large felon's misdemeanors with high-paid retiring package?

Are they fence-riding on plundering the politic-economical resources on Taiwan and the ingratiating vanity for being part of China without acting out their GUTs to move back to China or NATURALIZE to become a CHINESE??  Do you sympathize these drifting ghosts for the lack of the GUTs to claim their socio-political identity of China ? What do you think about their politically ingratiating loyalty to China based on the psycho-political inertia but "strong" enough to take on the easy route economically in looting and plundering Taiwan to compensate their Socio-Politic-Psychotic Anomie?  Don't they want to have the cake and eat it? Don't they have had  enough FREE LUNCH fed by the Taiwanese taxpayers for the last 6 decades?

The Socio-political Identity is a State of Mind and the Wimpy Inertia can only live in a waveringly falsified ghost-identity.

Then, those people who unequivocally identify themselves psycho-culturally with Taiwan, deserve the citizenry to built a Nation of their hope and ideals. Yes, saying is easily, the entangled interests among the power grid of these three hegemonic regimes have been tantalizing (if not torturing) the Will and Strength of Taiwanese long enough...

A short reflection relating to Donald Sterling's case
- Is there any JUSTICE existing in the Nationalist Government?????????????????????????

Thinking of Donald Sterling's private prejudicial expression cost him $ 2. 5 million dollars and was banned from MBA activities. But, this public service person, working as a consul to the US, who was paid by Taiwanese taxpayers, openly derogated Taiwanese with worse than Sterling's slurs on Taiwan's people. If he were here, he would have been a criminal case for violating the Constitutional rights. The most ridiculous thing was that not only has he been at large, but he will take on a high ranking position in the crony Nationalist government with a rich retirement package supported by the struggling Taiwanese working people who are hit hard by the downturn economy.
