Feb. 21 (Sn), 2016 Hidden Story ~ Diversity-Learning-No-Border Series ~ The Genuine Friendship and Courage for Justice.

~ Diversity-Learning-No-Border Series ~ #5  For both human and non-human sentient beings.

So, now, all my f2f and hybrid Diversity classes might be busy in watching movies as part of a film/documentary-analysis assignment (free choices from the themes of class, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, ableism, and the rest of diversity topics as well as their inter-sectionalities that affect life
chances.

Me, too, watched The Imitation Game (the genius mathematician and educator Alan Turing who was arrested for a crime much based on his sexuality, and later he committed suicide). Then, I browsed through several dear fb friends' posts regarding the following information which I have encountered several times, but never paid attention to, in particular, the WHITE athlete, until just now...

http://sfglobe.com/2015/12/07/white-man-in-the-photo-is-the-third-hero-that-night-in-1968

Nobody pays attention to the white man who isn't raising his fist, the truth is finally revealed...
Here's the truth behind one man who previously everyone has ignored.

The above long hidden story revealed much the positive force of genuine friendship and courage between two races during the darkest age of racism in these two countries. Both the two African-American athletes (Carlos and Smith and gold and bronze medalists, respectively) later were the pallbearers of Peter (the Australian silver medalist)..

It also reminds me of Jesse Owens in 1936 Olympics (regarding the aftermath of winning the medals as in 1968 Peter Norman - the sprinter encountered), a good share as usual. A movie about him was released a few weeks ago.

Following this vein, in my sociology class, some early African-athletes - yes, oftentimes, relating to sports, churches, and sometimes, music world where endured less from the orchestration based on the racially constructed reality, but more on the undeniable ingenuity - such as, Jackie Robinson (later, movie "42"), Hank Aaron, Jack Johnson...are the key characters in the chapter of race and ethnicity under social stratification unit. (Surely, Tiger Woods' 1/2 Asian blood, 1/4 of black, 1/8 of white, 1/8 of Native American, and the rest of components make Anthropology's No-Race theory an interesting and intriguing phenomenon...) Students question the one-drop-rule, due to my calling Tiger being an Asian in an analogy :)!

Xena Crystal Huang
Another story: Why and how did Billie Holiday record the Song - Strange Fruit - Mary Turner's Lynching tragedy. A little bit background story ". It was about a white man Smith's death which was followed by a week-long mob-driven manhunt. At least 13 people were killed. Among those whom the mob killed was Mary's husband, another black man Hayes Turner. He was captured on 18 May, 1918 and lynched. Hayes' wife Mary, at that time was eight-month pregnant, denied that her husband had been involved in Smith's killing, publicly opposed her husband's murder, and threatened to have members of the mob. The mob then determined to "teach her a lesson".

Although she fled, nevertheless captured at noon on 19 May. The mob of several hundred brought her to Folsom Bridge over the Little River, then tied her ankles, hung her upside down from a tree, doused her in gasoline and motor oil and set her on fire.

While Mary Turner was still alive, "a member of the mob split her abdomen open with a knife. Her unborn child fell on the ground, where it gave a cry before it was stomped on and crushed. Finally, Turner's body was riddled with hundreds of bullets. Mary Turner and her child were cut down and buried near the tree, with a whiskey bottle marking the grave...."

Xena Crystal Huang Indeed, progresses have been made and life "should move on" : How was Janus-faced, connecting the past with present and foreseeing the future (from a Roman god's perspective as the metaphor)?

The following map/website might encourge further progress as well as challenge some of the convential thoughts: https://www.splcenter.org/hate-map

It was not about race - but ethnicity and socio-economic domination and geo-political Hegemony, Formosa (Taiwan) sandwiched among Nationalist China, Communist China, Japan, the US., and "We, the Taiwanese People" who are thriving for a democratic and independent Nation - converging on this Island - ... till TODAY !!

Feb. 20 (Sa), 2016 How many positively reinforced thoughts are needed to make policy makers' job and social movements easier?

Did Carl Jung say that ?- See the following poster provided by a group of kind-n-wise people...

Think Positive Power with Subhransu Kumar Sen.Like Page
9 hrs ·

"I am not what happened to me.
I am what I choose to become.
Carl Jung

Keep your thoughts positive! ...See More
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Has Jung ever grown up from the slums, war-zones, refugee camps, or some interesting areas like that to say such an optimistic and nice remark of the abundant free will/choices?

Are tons of mind-uplifting cliches and positive thoughts - perhaps, properly speaking, don't they disseminate meritocratic myths and dominant-ideologies, which are imbued with lovely and lively spirit that, if, not functioning like opium to the entrenched life of the mass, then what else?

O.K. here is a "positiveness for today" - The endocrine fact of the positive thought might have nice effects on the release of oxytocin, or a proper amount of serotonin/dopamine to make those born unfortunately or involuntarily disadvantaged with a momentary good feeling via the nerve numbed.

In reality, rerouting one's uninvited adversities and dealing with undeserved social mischief are like diverting the privileged elite groups' domination and the institutional intrigues to individuals who, have to arbitrarily, bear most of the socio-economic unfortunate conditions - , oftentimes, not by choice, but much more of being "designed," - doesn't it make society and the dominants look much more humane and appreciable? Who can imagine, without these loving and caring cliches or "kind-n-wise words" to "comfort" the mass, how can the life and soul of the subordinated groups to move on?

How vast are the blind spots of the privileged who possess beyond what they deserve without the awareness, or being conscious of, but deny it..., and for those who with social agenda- the myth are deliberately created.

What is the pivot to understand the mechanism between individual agency and institutional power?

-------------------------------------------------------------

Crystal:  Thanks,  what a caring, inspiring, and harmless quote - filled with "free wills", if not socially constructed from the dominant groups' ideology?

So, don't whine about society, blaming yourself! There are not so much about social problems, but individual troubles!!! Yes, life is unfair, swallowing your share of unfairness and keep quiet, or memorize more soul-lifting quotes to feel momentary good.

Jung passed away. The following one has much more influence in the business world - another kind-n-inspiring advice to uplift the mind and heart of the mass:

We, the overly-amused People - Who/How to stop the ideological foray of the Supreme Court PROBLEMs?

What is EXACTLY the undercurrent in such a foray? What is the ONLY job in the US that one can over-privilegedly POSSESS till death (Justice Scalia in the post for almost 30 YEARS!), still messing up the nation - nominated and passed by those with wealth, status and power (majority, inherited)?

Am I not quite a politically generous person who tolerates enough for the 4-year term of presidency, gubernatorial 4-years, senatorial 6-years , and 2 years of representative's?

This is nothing new for many WE, THE over-amused PEOPLE, who kindly offer 6 to 9 year term for any type of Justices to get rid of ideological/presidential nomination and both houses' mischievous dragging dramas !!!!

Isn't it long enough to get something done properly in the digital era?

Then, perhaps, both the wimpy and corky Parties will be less interested in engaging all sorts of nonsensical, ideological, undesirable and expensive shows smile emoticon!

Jan 24 (Sn), 2016 How to find your own momentary truth in human societies?

Just finishing watching NFL-NFC champion game (Cardinals vs. Panthers), as usual, not being serious, thought of these well-known sport phenomena:  how football fans immersed their whole heart and soul in their beloved team patriotically and religiously. Players dare-devilishly gladiatored at the Postmodern-Rome Coliseum enthused with money, fame, and the undesired-injuries, offered by the mega-commercials, sport-news media, owners, and orchestrated by NFL for the money-can-buy-ephemeral-joy package.

I always agree, indeed that the fans' enthralled spirit and enthusiasm find the ABSOLUTELY momentary TRUTH in this transient world supported by NFL (in this case, yes football, just to name "a few") - in letting go, temporarily, of the unnameable depression-n-anxiety, irritating tax-filing, irksome job, relational/workplace problems, marriage/family feuds, funny Hollywood style of politicians tangoing in the D.C., greedy bankers dancing in the Wall Street Casino, the hide-n-seek terrorists, and the peek-a-boo of  "the end of the world' and so on so forth...? :)!

I shared that fleeting joy and happiness, and temporarily set aside all my sociological analysis of "Sports and Social Class".  Even though, not my favorite sport and team, I momentarily owned that slice of glee in my paradoxical world.

Precious and respectful - is my new Eureka and Ideology, and concluded with Occam's razor, though long enough to be cut short ! See below.

Jan 24 (Sn) 2016 What are the Capitalistic and Socialistic Approaches to Render the Hierarchy of Wants?

What are the capitalistic and socialistic approaches to render the Hierarchy of Wants when there are 7.4 billion population on this Planet, not to mention the problems of Hierarchy of "Needs" having been troubling this world long enough?

Jan 22 (F), 2016 Eulogy - Birth Order and Life Chances

In all walks of life, privileges and advantages are omnipresent!

Even in an impoverished household, since the life privileges might not favor such an environment,  there, still existing different types of luck or unluckiness, such as the most significant one - the birth order, taking on the alternative form of potential privilege or disadvantage.

The following Eulogy is about how my birth order being the 7th, if switched with my eldest sister's (who passed away a week ago), my life destiny could have been similar to the story in this poster. While her life was nothing but sacrifice, I am able to enjoy my tiny adventures and struggles in the US.

Max Weber's term "Life Chances" is an intriguing and provocative  notion!!

Obviously, compared to my eldest sister's, my life is merely a sheet luck and privilege...

Xena Crystal Huang Thanks Chen Mei. Both my eldest brother and sister had a Japanese name due to Japanese occupation on Taiwan (1895 to 1945). After Japan was defeated, us younger siblings' names were not influcenced by Japan's ruling (surely, and the rest of cultural dominations).
