An international complexity -大家西瓜倚大邊:
Taiwan lost her representation in the United Nation in 1971. Many countries preferred a Big totalitarian regime controlled by CCP to replace "a-not-so-big" turning-into-democratic Taiwan.
See "The United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758".
It was passed in response to the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 1668 that required any change in CCP's representation in the UN to be determined by a "2/3" vote referring to Article 18 of the UN Charter.

The resolution, since 25 October 1971, recognized the People's Republic of China - CCP as "the only" legitimate representative to the United Nations" and removed the collective representatives of Chiang Kai-shek who was the military authority in Taiwan at that time.

A road less traveled? Teaching Sociology was much much thrilling of privileges than that of psychology, visual arts (Ya, Art, though, not without "glitches" in a tech college setting) that I taught. Why? Can be written into a book. Stay tuned, if time is available or interested.

Sept. 13 (Sn), 2020 The real Mu-lan in the historic-cultural context : the 1998 animated version.

Just found my old, fluffy writing about the animated version of Mu-lan, released in 1998.

Hope, not a spoiler...

The above photo was downloaded from the Trustees of the British Museum.

‘Mu-lan’, in the historic-cultural context (The Animated version, released, 1998) published in the Dunn County News, June 1998

KRYSTAL XENA LC HUANG·SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2020· READING TIME: 5 MINUTES

Recently, I went to the State Theater to watch the Disney production- ‘Mu-lan’- an actual historical figure named Mu-lan Hwa (花木蘭) who lived during the Sui and Tang dynasties, 581-618 C.E.
It was fun entertainment with high quality of special digital effects in portraying her imagery. Nonetheless, there are more messages behind the screen version that I learned from my country-Taiwan, related to Mu-lan that might interest you, too.

Here they go:
Like her western counterpart Joan of Arc (1412 – 30 May 1431, C.E..), "The Maid of Orléans" considered a heroine of France for her role during the Lancastrian phase of the Hundred Years' War, later canonized as a Catholic saint., the well-known Mu-lan Hwa has long been identified as a heroine in part of Asia. As we know, Joan of Arc was inspired by the Divinity, while Mu-lan, mainly, by the filial piety of the conventional familialism.

The other interesting contrast of the renowned Snow White and Mu-lan is that these two females’ characters represent quite opposite gender images with different cultural and educational connotations. For the former, it provides a fairyland for children’s imagination and fantasy, via happy ending through ordeal twists and turns, the gentle and kindness is eventually recognized and rewarded with a happy-ever-after-marriage. Hope, optimism, and happiness are the aspirations of our existence.

On the screen, through wonderful entertaining effect, Mu-lan Hwa, the Xena-the-Warrior Princess-style historical heroine known for her military acumen, bravery, filial piety (family loyalty), and patriotism was slightly modified. Disney’s version of Mu-lan becomes a very simple, feminine, and cunning cutie. The subtle touch, however, of family honor, social responsibility makes the originally quite serious theme acceptable and enjoyable.

But, unlike traditional Disney’s portrait of female cartoon images, such as Cinderella, Little Mermaid, Beauty, and Beast, etc., the Mu-lan legend seems have a tinge of feminism through the celebration of a female heroine.

The underlying point is that contrary to conventional feminist ideology, Mu-lan’s disguising herself as a male warrior, did not say much about her gender awakening in the historical and social context of the time. The male supremacy had been taken for granted for centuries. Rather the young woman’s motivations for becoming a warrior lay more in the sense of filial piety that she had to help her father who was too old to fight. In the traditional version of the tale (not mentioned in the movie), she also had a brother who was too young to go to the battlefield.

In short, from the known historical documents, Mu-lan was recorded as an excellent warrior, gone through numerous bloody campaigns, and proved the quality of her martial skills and strong determination in a male gender preferential society. Family love, courage, obligation, and commitment through her, reveal her Confucian ethical humanism.

Furthermore, a significant point of view associated with Mu-lan that needs to be elaborated here, and which is an important aspect of her legend as it is known in Asia, is that of the military thoughts and practice - the philosophy or the Art of War.

Historically speaking, the thousand years of constant “barbarian threats” and unremitting incursions of volatile nomadic peoples, fostered generations of professional military figures who developed many sophisticated military strategies. During the fifth and sixth centuries, B.C.E. the most significant war theorists are Sun-tsu (孫子), Wu-tsu (吳起), and Han Fei-tsu (韓非子).

Among classic military treatises, the one perhaps known best in the West is “The Art of War,” - a holistic warfare classic consisting of military tactics, psychology, geography, management, espionage, and so on, by Sun-tsu. A compendium was compiled at Song Dynasty-the Seven Military Classics.(1078 C.E. circa). This dynasty was also famous for its eminent female generals/warriors, such as Lang Hong-yu (梁紅玉), 秦良玉 (Chin Lang-yu), Mu Guai-in (穆桂英), and her in-laws' female warriors in the respectable family of Young Gia Ginag (楊家將). Why, according to some historians ‘perspectives, the South Song Dynasty paid attention to the literati to serve the officialdom and ignored, even suppressed military built-up for fear of the well-fed warlords’ potential coups or usurping the crown. The unbalanced political policy invited the peeping northern "barbarians'" invasions. Many generals and soldiers sacrificed on the battlefields. In the long run, wives, female-in-laws, passed on the baton,  relaying in the war-zones.

In stark contrast to the militarists were the orthodox philosophy of Confucius (551-479 B.C.E) and Mencius, (371-289 B.C.E, another important ethical philosopher, second to Confucius,) who insisted on cultivating the ruler’s virtue and implementing benevolent policies. Their humanistic philosophies were a major factor in the conduct of military affairs that were disdained by government officials for many centuries, particularly, the Song Dynasty, as mentioned above.

Yet that suppression of military thought did not smother the seed of its wisdom. The most profound treatises developed by Sun-tsu - “The Art of War” was first translated by a French missionary about two hundred years ago. The book was reportedly employed by Napoleon and some Nazi High Command.
Over the last decades, due to global business expansion and competition, the growth of Western society's interest in Far-eastern societies is noticeable. In particular, one sees the phenomenon of “corporate warfare,” and in its most modern incarnation, these traditional philosophies and strategies for battle are now employed in the business arena.

In the Far-eastern part of Asia, the continuous reinterpreting the ancient wisdom is also going on, particularly in the entrepreneurship. For example, a commercially revised Sun-tsu’s warfare theory has once become the bestseller for quite a while. Not to mention people in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, and Singapore have held the intensive study to seek insight from the Art of War, not only for the business sphere but also into the personal life.

As a final note - in my country, Taiwan, Mu-lan is a synonym for a female officer or solider. Being a veteran- Mu-lan myself, I have a deep emotional appreciation of this Disney production and the values it expresses. Now, picking up the book, rereading the Art of War, I do enjoy more of the messages between the lines.

Recalling early October, NBA said it was “regrettable” regarding Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey's tweet in supporting Hong Kong anti-government protesters. The rapid fallout sparkled China's "boycott" on the US business and damaged the BIG money/advertisements sponsored by whom has the BIG voices and the purchasing power ... Money tall$$$$ks!
