Why and when is this dreadful word - "union" becoming so scaaaary - in Wisconsin ? - I mean, for blue-collar  and some white-collar workers.  The Teachers' Union Scholarship had to put on the new Emperor's clothes "integrated into"  the welcomed tag of CVTC Foundation Scholarship...  More interestingly speaking, the union membership has been shrinking drastically after ACT 10 - from more than 160 members to now, 20ish....  Who are these 20ish?  Daredevils? (I am one of these demons...).

Indeed, the $900 dollars' annual fee can buy more food, or do more fun things when the paycheck is getting smaller and smaller; the class size is turning into bigger and bigger; the teaching loads are heavier and heavier; the stress and anxiety of being laid off is getting overwhelming; silence is pure golden; the working conditions are running low of the morale; suspicion/mistrust between/among instructors, staff, and administrators are all time high, and over-powering micromanaging without check-n-balance is on the rise. Thank to our Very Ambitious governor aiming at Presidency who spring-boards on Wisconsin well.

Don't get me wrong that I am a blind Union supporter. I do like to see how deadwood is "properly purged" to get rid of the irresponsible notion of job security in protecting the incompetent, for the taxpayers' sake, and I also witness the power-inflation to certain segments of the educational system under the governor's abetting wings with intended and unintended toxic consequences.

Now, it is no more a secret: the best part of losing a Union is that those anti-union/scabs protected by the Union members for so long,  now are the first group to enjoy the flavor of the de-unionized taste. Those free-loading privileges, entitlements, and benefits which were bargained, fought, and earned by the Union members and officers are taken away one by one from both members and non-members.

QC is an important idea and practice to manufacturing and producing businesses. Industrial quality control enhances productivity and increases profit. Some business models were invented and applied to the educational setting. It is interesting to see in the edu-enterprises, and ask: do the for-profit edu-businesses produce higher quality of learning outcomes compared those which are non-profit? Can human learners be treated ( trained or educated?)  like running on  Ford-Taylor's efficient assembly line?

The truly professional and competent educators with integrity, ethics, and moral high-ground, no matter what conditions, deeply believing in the important functions of Union in a democratic-capitalistic society are respectful. They once in a while, witness the unprofessional people parasitically spoiled by the Union (both members and non-members), and ambivalently see them go.

The existence of the white collar union manifests an important function to support and inspire the blue collar unions. Workers, unify, you lose nothing, unless, your courage and integrity.

Meanwhile, what happened to Baltimore, still, the bell, ringing !
President Lincoln did say "another kind of union" a lot. He was not afraid or scared:
"Fellow-citizens, we cannot escape history. We of this Congress and this administration, will be remembered in spite of ourselves. No personal significance, or insignificance, can spare one or another of us. The fiery trial through which we pass, will light us down, in honor or dishonor, to the latest generation. We say we are for the Union. The world will not forget that we say this. We know how to save the Union. The world knows we do know how to save it. We -- even we here -- hold the power, and bear the responsibility. In giving freedom to the slave, we assure freedom to the free -- honorable alike in what we give, and what we preserve. We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth. Other means may succeed; this could not fail. The way is plain, peaceful, generous, just -- a way which, if followed, the world will forever applaud, and God must forever bless..."

See More

Long time ago, America was the land of Free, and home of the Brave to build a great and NEW nation - Taiwan can, too, but she might lack of some other geo-political capitals, and the rest of global hierarchical/hegemonic, confounding factors, which take time to fight for.

Note: You might wonder why, not until 1924, did the U S Congress grant citizenship to All Native Americans -the original inhabitants of this vast land -due to the supreme court case of Elk vs. Wilkins in 1884. Not to mention Dred Scott vs. Sanford case in 1857 debated regarding whether African Americans (most of them were slaves at that time) were US. Citizens or not!

Now she is the paradise of the rich and the powerful... and quandary of the voiceless and the poor.

In fact, this is one of the most controversial problems in the US immigration laws. The US grants dual citizenship to 64 countries, while she will not allow it to happen to other 65 countries (For the list, refer to  http://www.dlgimmigration.com/united-states-citizenship/list-of-countries-that-allow-or-disallow-dual-citizenship/) Some pick-n-choose issues here, is beyond the scope of this post. There are historical, politic-economic, socio-cultural reasons for US - the world largest immigrant nation to do so. The less complex naturalization can happen by birth, by marriage, by adoption, by place...etc. and the US. mainly,

But if individuals intend to steal or transport his/her NATIVE/mother country's money, power and the rest of property to the hosting country for inexcusable or unjustifiable reasons, then they are unfairly and heartlessly damaging his/her motherland, while benefiting (even welcomed) by the hosting country.

I do agree with Johnny to a certain degree that I have seen so many rich and powerful families from Taiwan (now China too), bringing in tons of money in the name of pursuing US academic degrees, and real estates / business investments...etc. to benefit US economic conditions. Would anyone deny that one of the greatest strengths of US is------------ her irresistibly "Exceptional"  ATTRACTION !?? (but how do you define "attraction" is another story). Not many other countries have that. So, upgrade to a SuperNation as soon as one can grin emoticon!

April 27 (M), 2015. College Inc. - how does an Edu-enterprise claim bankruptcy?

3 hrs · Edited ·

College Inc. (EduCompanies! How to claim a bankruptcy? ) !! - a tip of educapitalistic iceberg?

A brief on the issues of this Edu-enterprise:
"Corinthian Colleges Inc., the for-profit-college company that was pushed to the brink of collapse last summer when the U.S. Department of Education tightened its financial oversight of the troubled enterprise, announced on Sunday that it had ceased operations and would close all of its remaining 28 campuses as of Monday....

Approximately 16,000 students will be affected by the closures, which involve the Corinthian subsidiaries Everest College, Everest Institute, Herald College, and WyoTech, mostly in California and other western states." See More

Corinthian Colleges Inc. to Close Its Remaining Campuses
The company blamed the move on state and federal penalties and efforts to impose conditions on campus sales. The closures prompted renewed calls for loan forgiveness for Corinthian students.

Selling and buying 95 campuses; tradinig, trends of stock market, resorting to Bankers for "alternative strategies".... these attractive terms permeated in the article - all kinds of everything except EDUCATION !!!

This vast for-profit edu-enterprise has been swallowing 1.4 billion dollars annually of Pell grants from the Federal Government for so long. Seemingly I have been foced to be one of the million culprits - the innocent, loyal, obdient taxpayers contributing to such an edu-plundering business?

Compared to football teams, basketball teams,...or any other Golden- Goose teams, SellingBuying schools like commodities, might not sound extremely profitable, but with Federal government's billions of dollar grants, they are still very attractive and lucrative.

You have one political Party believing in Education for Sale, and the other Party singing "Let it be".... who suffers?

Greetings to all,

Though, the semester is close to the end, what never ends is our deep conviction that education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom. Education is the most important investment in knowledge that pays the best interest. Thus, we may say that the whole purpose of education is to turn "mirrors" into "windows" for our students and ourselves.

With the care, enthusiasm, and assistance of every one of us, many of our heroes are steadily moving forward the goals during their learning journey at our school.

Thanks to your continued support, CVTC Education Association Scholarship Fund is able to award scholarships to our students. From 2015, the new policy states that donors will not participate in selecting the recipients. CVTC Scholarship Foundation takes on the role of selection. After the qualified applicants were chosen (seven this time), they were sent to me for final ranking based on the scholarship statements, achievements, and GPA. Seven recipients with program/degree and instructors' references are shown in the table attached below.

Thanks a lot! Your time to provide recommendations/reference for our students is much appreciated.

One more thought: CVTC Education Association Scholarship, in fact, desperately needs your TLC. Due to several factors, your generosity and care are essential to keep our scholarship going and growing. Any amount of support per pay check is feasible to collectively show our care for our students.

          Thanks.
