Crystal Huang Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now I'm found.
'Twas blind, but now I see.
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.
When we've been there ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Then when we first begun.
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now I'm found.
Was blind, but now I see.

More info, refer to https://en.wikipedia.org/?title=Amazing_Grace:

"Amazing Grace" is a Christian hymn published in 1779, with words written by the English poet and clergyman John Newton (1725–1807).

Newton wrote the words from personal experience. He grew up without any particular religious conviction, but his life's path was formed by a variety of twists and coincidences that were often put into motion by his recalcitrant insubordination. He was pressed (involuntarily forced) into service in the Royal Navy, and after leaving the service, he became involved in the Atlantic slave trade. In 1748, a violent storm battered his vessel off the coast of County Donegal, Ireland so severely that he called out to God for mercy, a moment that marked his spiritual conversion. Whilst his boat was being repaired in Lough Swilly, he wrote the first verse of his world famous song. He did however, continue his slave trading career until 1754 or 1755, when he ended his seafaring altogether and began studying Christian theology.

Ordained in the Church of England in 1764, Newton became curate of Olney, Buckinghamshire, where he began to write hymns with poet William Cowper. "Amazing Grace" was written to illustrate a sermon on New Year's Day of 1773. It is unknown if there was any music accompanying the verses; it may have simply been chanted by the congregation. It debuted in print in 1779 in Newton and Cowper's Olney Hymns but settled into relative obscurity in England. In the United States however, "Amazing Grace" was used extensively during the Second Great Awakening in the early 19th century. It has been associated with more than 20 melodies, but in 1835 it was joined to a tune named "New Britain" to which it is most frequently sung today."

Pop-quiz for today:
Is racism a "mental" illness? or the toughest "cultural" disease of countries straddling on, such as, segregation, apartheid, and slavery (e.g., "South Africa"-mmm... a while ago...)?

Crystal Huang Roof's medicine, indeed might cause some type of violent behaviors. But is violence equivalent to "racism" or the main reason to cause hate crime? Isn't "medicalization of deviant behaviors" a controversial issue in the contemporary society?
1 hr · Edited · Like · 1

Matthew Win Tibbals I always heard that racism was a natural tendency and it's tolerance which needs to be learned.
Racism was at one point beneficial to our survival. When early humans led more nomadic lives there was a lot more inbreeding within groups. That is how you could know who was friend vs. enemy, by distrusting those who look different.
1 hr · Unlike · 2

Crystal Huang Indeed, in the long past. Is civilization possible (like you mentioned - the learning processes) ? Can humanity evolve less animal-like (of course, some animal species are quite "civilized' smile emoticon!)? Is there existing any difference among civilized, less civilized, and uncivilized (including those go-betweens) societies? and how-n-why they were differentiated in such a spectrum?

Julie Yollin Berk it is/was only natural to recoil from "physically challenged" (don't know the current PC term) to help the species survive and continue so we do indeed need to learn to accept them - it doesn't come naturally
1 hr · Unlike · 1

Crystal Huang Julie, if Social Darwinism has merit, could it be the endeavor to equate humans to the wild animals in the wild jungle (unless one feeling today's jungle is no difference from the ancient time?) that are dictated by instinct and basic survival schemes. Are humans able to evolve beyond the bio-determinism? It might be understandable when resources are scarce, such as food, shelter, water, air...etc (not to mention the available opportunities of education, jobs and health care and so on - the essences for functioning as a proper human being). Unfortunately, most important resources are dominated/hoarded by a small portion of humans, and most of them are through inter-generational pass-on/ inheritance; only a few earned via socio-economic convergence plus individual ingenuity. Some of them enjoy controlling the policy makers or occupying the political arena under the lovely and protective capitalism; alas, aren't they important orchestrators to help push the human evolution back to the dark age (e.g., is climate change a hoax? So as the stimulated instant-gratification, toss-away culture, artificial and forced consumption/over-consumption, the deteriorating environments, the extinct and endangered species, pissing people off against one another based on no fault of one's own - e.g., race/ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, disabilities..... you name it) - isn't this a main source of social chaos (haha, don't they include hate crimes, directly or indirectly??).

Brief (of the above poster): Doesn't it happen during a time when education is the most powerful feeding and mind-controlling machine as well as propagandistic mechanism, while the critical thinking capacity is deemed as a threat to the advantaged and the privileged (may include the inherited rich and the undeserved powerful, if you like) of the ruling class/elite?

  • Crystal Huang Shouldn't it also include the precarious culprit - family's informal education (not all) - another powerful, ideological transmitter, next to religion (again, not all), as a dominant social institution/invisible force?

Here is my thought, including biases:

Many studies (and in reality) show that capital punishment does not deter heinous crimes.
If the death penalty works, why people still commit the crime?
In the international communities, abolishing death penalty is an indicator of a civilized society.

If a capital punishment is necessary, then it, in fact, punishes whom(s), what and how?
Most of crimes do not occur just “ONLY” because of individual’s snappy “decision making”, unless mentally challenged. Its culprits might directly and indirectly include various factors, such as individual’s socialization processes, race, ethnicity, socio-economic system, and the rest of hidden influences (including questioning the justice of Law per se, such as, you know well - 刑不上大夫).

Why do people believe in that the old fashion of an-eye-for-an-eye approach can get rid of the roots of crime? Many societies have abandoned the old-style of vengeful methods, if they are truly civilized.

In short, identifying the roots of crime and solving the problems properly and humanely (yes, takes time) should be the concerns, instead of using the easy and quick 鋸箭法 that affects the image of Taiwan in the International communities.
    (除非自我承認是亂世, 但非用重典嗎? 根本不是地嗎!)

Keep in mind - Taiwan is a very progressive, advanced and civilized Nation, compared to her neighboring BIG and small countries and the rest of the world.

    Don't get her tarnished.

Crystal Huang Many time-machine stories happened during this trip.
For example, my sister and I, then went to a Veteran Center to renew a certificate (nothing to do with 18% tongue emoticon!, since I was a early retiree). The officer thought that I might be a dependent of some old vet. Then he asked me to prove with a document as a retired captain, which I lost 30 years ago. Finally they sent a paper work to the Department of Defense for a proof! The photo below said nothing about it (yes, during those days, Taiwan faced international crises, instead of Nationalism or internal Party confrontations).
